PATENT OEETcE.
OTTOMAN ZAR-ADUSHT-HANISH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HARRY GEORGE AND CAROLYN DRIVER, OF CHI CAGO, ILLINOIS.
MASSAGE DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 754,925, dated March 15, 1904.
Application filed August 22, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTOMAN ZAR-ADUSHT- HANISH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Massaging Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be employed in massage work or treatment; and it consists of a ball or spherical body engaging a shell or cup having a concave recess adapted to receive a portion of the ball. The shell or cup is held in the hand of the user, while the exposed or protruding portion of the ball engages the face or other portion of the body to be massaged, the ball being free to move in the recess of the cup or shell.
The object of the device is to facilitate treatment of this character and to increase the beneficial results to be obtained therefrom.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, as well as the objects it is intended to accomplish, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings,in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates my improved device in use. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the device. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the ball and cup, respectively.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the ball or spherical body, and 6 the cup or shell, having a concave recess adapted to fit the ball and in which the latter is allowed to move freely as the protruding portion of the ball is applied to the surface to be operated upon. At its Serial No. 170,470. (No model.)
mouth the cup flares outwardly. As shown in the drawings, the exterior surface of the cup is spherical. It is evident, however, that this external surface may be of any other or desired shape that may be preferred. terior of the cup should be sufiiciently smooth to allow the ball to move freely therein as a projecting part of the latter is applied to the surface of the body during treatment.
When the device is in use, it is preferably taken in the hand substantially as shown in Fig. 1, and while the case or cup is held by the thumb and fingers the ball is applied to the body of the patient and moved about as may be desired by the operator. During this treatment the ball moves freely in the shell and acts to produce highly beneficial massaging results in a comparatively short space of time.
Attention is called to the fact that any suitable material may be employed in the manufacture of the device. I obtain good results by making both parts of wood, and I prefer to make the two parts of different kinds of wood. It must be understood, however, that I do not limit myself to any special material for use in the manufacture of the device, as I am aware that many different materials may be advantageously employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of a ball or spherical body, and a body having a recess or socket adapted to receive a portion of the spherical body so as to bear against said portion at every point, while a portion of the latter protrudes, the engaging surfaces of the two bodies being sufficiently smooth to allow the one to move within or upon the other when the device is in use.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTOMAN ZAR-ADUSHT-HANISH.
Witnesses:
