Description
No. 754,518. PATENTED MAR. 15, 1904. L. H. TORRBY. SUSPENSION HOOK.
K0 MODEL.
UNITED STATE Patented March 15, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
SUSPENSION-HOOK- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,518, dated March 15, 1904. Application filed December 11, 1903. Serial No. 184,734. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS H. TORREY, a citizen of the United States, residing atWorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension-Hooks of which the following is a specification, ref' erence being had therein to the-accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a suspending device or hook which may be opened when it is desired to engage the ring of a swivel or other Similar device attached to a part which is to be suspended, but which after the swivel-ring or other device is placed in position may be closed to prevent adisengagement of the parts, the suspending-hook having as a part of its construction a separable ring or loop which may be opened, if necessary, when it is desired to engage it with the support or part from which it is to be suspended or with which it is to be connected.
' To this end the improved suspending device comprises two curved arms provided with shanks permanently attached together by a connecting pivot-pin or rivet and one of which shanks is provided with a hook having an open mouth to be closed by the other of said shanks when the device is in operative position. The two curved arms are formed with overlapping portions, preferably cut away and flattened on their contiguous sides or faces, so as to be in a measure halved together, and these recessed or halved portions of the said curved arms are preferably so arranged relative to each other as to have a strong frictional contact with each other when closed together to form a suspending-ring, so that such suspending-ring cannot be opened without the application of some force, and therefore will not become opened accidentally.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the improved suspension-hook in its closed position; and Fig. 2 represents the same fully opened, so that the swivel device can be engaged with or disengaged therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a top view to show the overlapping recessed or halved-together parts of the curved arms. Fig. 4 illustrates a slightlymodified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, a 6 denote two curved or semicircular arms, which when closed together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, form a suspending-ring. Each of saidarms is provided with a shank a b, said shanks being permanently connected together by a pivot pin or rivetc and the longer shank 6 being constructed to form a hook 6 having an open mouth 6 normally closed by the shorter shank a when the device is in operative position. The overlapping parts d d of the arms a Z) are recessed on their contiguous faces and are preferably flattened and slightly inclined, so that they may be closed together with a strong frictional contact which will prevent their accidental displacement. The shank a of the arm 0; is preferably of such construction that the two arms forming the suspending-ring may be opened to a considerable extent, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, without opening the hook Z2 so that even if the arm should become somewhat separated the hook would not be sufliciently opened to permit a suspending or swivel ring 0, which might be engaged therewith, to escape from said hook. This is an advantage in engaging the hooked or curved arms a I; with some large object which will not permit said arms to be closed together, as shown in Fig. 1. The suspending-ring (2 has in the present instance a swiveled connection with a loop f, on which a swing razor-strop or any other similar device to be suspended may be properly disposed.
In the modified construction shown in Fig 4 the two pivotally-connected shanks g of the arms a, 12, forming the separable ring, are of equal length and are both recessed to form a hooked portion which may be opened when the arms are spread apart, as shown in said figure.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A suspension-hook comprising two curved overlapping arms having shanks which are pivotally connected together, one of said shanks being provided with an open hook closed by the other of said shanks when the device is in In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in operative condition, the overlapping portions presence of two witnesses.
of said arms having inclined flattened contiguous faces constructed and arranged to have a LEWIS TORREY' 5 strong frictional contact with each other when Witnesses:
said arms are closed together to form a sus- E. H. H. WILSON,
