struction of frames of this character and at vided with a longitudinal central' rib 15, and .a guide-plate 16 is removably fastened to this rib at each end thereof and projects on either Sections, the end of said cover-sections being LOOSE-LEF -BINDER-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part or Letters Patent No. 754,324, dated March s, 1904.
Application filed August 4, 1902.
To atl whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. LORENZ, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvey ments in Loose-Leaf Binder-Frames, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates tofnovel improvements in loose-leaf binder-frames, and hasfor its object to simplify and improve the conthe same time lessen the cost of manufacture.
'With these and other objects in view the invention contemplates a frame in three sections, a back section and two corresponding cover-sections which are connected by crossed levers having' their endssuitably guided in the cover-sections, and a single screw connected with one of the sections andwith saidA levers at the point where they cross each other, wherebyv both of the lcover-sections maybe adjusted relative to the back section in the same manner and to a corresponding degree by manipulating the'single screw.
I have illustrated one form in which my invention may be embodied in the accompanying drawings, in ,whichf Figure 1 shows the inside of a frame containing the invention with the covers extended and partly broken away. Figs. 2 and 3 are 'transverse sectional views on the lines 2 A2 and 3 3, respectively, of Fig, 1.
In the drawings like numerals of 'reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures, and referring thereto 10 designates the back section, and 11 12 the two coversections, which together'constitute the principal parts Yof the frame. In the construction shown in the drawings the cover-sections-are of angular shape and are each provided with inwardly-extending ends 13, which are al4 rangedto slide inside of the ends 14 on the back section'. The back section is shown proside of the rib to form a guide for the cover- .structed surface.
Serial No. 113,291l (No model.)
' held snugly between these guides and the ends of the back section.`
The two cover-sections are fastened `to the back section and maintained in corresponding relation thereto by a pair of levers 17, which cross each other at their middle and are provided at their ends with pins 18,'which are arranged to ride in longitudinal grooves 19 in the cover-sections. The crossed levers 17 are secured to the back section by means of a'bolt 20, which-is screwed into an opening in the back and is provided with a shoulder 21 to bear against the crossed levers and hold them in place. .This bolt is provided with an enlarged head 22, and a screw-bolt 23 is arranged in a-transverse threaded 4opening 24: in said head and. extends through the side of one of the cover-sections. 'Ihe head 25 of the bolt is adapted to receive a key, and a washer 26 and pin 27 secure the bolt in the recessed offset section 28 of-the cover-'section;A -The head ofthe bolt is countersunk in the cover-section,'so that the outer face of said section may present a smooth and unob- I provide four leaf-rests, each of which comprises a-tube 30, fastened to one cover-section, and a rod 31, fastened to the other cover-section and Ioperating in the tube. These leafe rests arel preferably arranged with the tubes and rods-,on each ,cover-section alternating with each other. v
The covers 32 may be connected-With the cover-sections in anysuitable manner, as by pivot-pins 33 passing through the lugs 34.-
It Vwill thus be observed that I employ only i a single screw extending through the side of the framey for adjusting the cover-sections p and that these cover-sections are secured together, and to the back section by means of the crossed levers, whichmaintain the coversections in 'positive and xed relation to each other and to the back'section and which. are
caused to operate by turning the screw to adrv just the cover-sections in' absolute correspond-`l ence to each other. The crossed levers also' hold 'thecover-sections in constant proper alinernent with eachother and with -the back .securely in place;
section and prevent bindingfat either end of the frame. While I prefer to employ the guide-plates at each end of the back Section, it is apparent that these guides are not absolutely necessary, because the crossed levers will'hold the sections in proper relation.
As my improved binder-frame comprises only a very few parts and as the construction and operation is very simple, it is apparent that it can' be manufactured inexpensively without detraeting from its strength or usefulness.. I may make the frame by stamping the sections out of sheet metal or by casting them, or, if desired, each section may be built up of plates properly formed and fastened together. n
The binder-'frame may be made in any desired size, and it will be observed that pressure can be supplied by adjusting the screw-bolt to clamp the cover-section on the leaves as tightly as required tohold them rigidly and My improved binder-frame is free from complicated parts and does not require any degree of special skill for operating.
I am awareI that my invention may be embodied in many diii'ferent forms which will differ from each other and from that herein shown and described in the details of construetion and arrangement of parts, and itv will be understood that I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I do not limit the inventionto the use of leaf-rests of any particular number .or construction; nor do I limit myself to any particular manner of connecting 4the covers with the frame, as various means may be employed for this purpose without departing from `the invention.
It will of course be understood that the sections are intended to be covered with leather, cloth, or other suitable material and that the back section, which carries the inscription, is always held intermediate of the covers by reason of the fact that both cover-sections are adjusted simultaneously and to a corresponding degree.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A loose-leaf binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, crossed levers connecting said cover-sections, and a screw arranged transversely in the frame and adapted to be operated to adjust the cover-sections simultaneously.
2. Y v
4:. A loose-leaf binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, crossed levers connected at their ends to said coversections, and a screw bolt arranged transversely in the frame and having a bearing against one cover-section and connected-with said crossed levers to adjust both cover-sections simultaneously.
5. A loose-leaf binder-fr me comprising a back section and two cover-sections, levers connected at their .ends to said cover-sections and crossed at "or about the middle of the frame, and a transversely-arranged screw-bolt connected with said levers at the point where they cross each other.
6. A loose-leaf binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, crossed levers connected at their ends to the coversections and at their middle with the back section, and a screw-bolt connected to said levers at or about their middle and -havinga bearing against one of said sections.

9. A loose-leaf binder-frame comprising a back section and Atwo cover-sections, connecting means for said cover-sections, a member carried by said back section and provided with a transverse threaded bolt opening therein, and a screw-boltperating through and bear ing against one cover-section and working in said threaded opening. j
10. A loose-leaf binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, levers connected at their ends to said cover-sections and crossing each other at or about' the middle oi' the frame, a bol-t passing through said levers where they cross and secured to the IIO which is movable with relation to the other,
