WATERBURY BUCKLE CO, OF W NATION.
ATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPO- eagnmsur sueeoree;
srnorrrea'rron' forming part of Letters Patent No. '754,1 94n, dated March. e, 1904.- Application filed December 22, 1903. Serial No. 186,166. (1% model.)
To all whom it may concern.-v
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BUCHANAN, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporters;
and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings con- 'sti'tute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a garment-supporter constructed in accordance with my invention shown in the open position; Fig. 2, a side view, partially in section, of the same with the button-lever in the closed position; Fig. 3, a front or plan view of the same; Fig. 4, a side view of a garment-supporter constructed in accordance with my invention and provided with a spring for separating the two members of the clasp. I
This invention relates to an improvement in garment supporters, and particularly to that class which comprises a button and means for detachably connecting it with a garment and such as are commonly called bachelor-buttons, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby a button may be readily and conveniently attached and detached, as required; and the invention consists in the construction 'as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a button 2, the shank 3 of which is secured to a lever 4, which is pivoted between the arms 5 of the back-plate 6 or, as we will hereinafter for convenience call it, the fixed plate, the said fixed plate 6 being formed at its forward edge with a gripping edge and its Tear end with an arm 8, turned at substantially right angles to the plate and formed with a transverse slot 9. The outer member 10 of the clasp, which for convenience we will hereinafter call the swinging member, is pro' vided at its outer end with a gripping edge 11 position.
and at its rear end is depressed and formed with notches 12-on opposite sides to give clearance for the arms 5, between which it exwill be formed with a finger 1a, which may be.
struck up from the said member 10, this finger extending into the path of the inner end of the lever 14: and so that when the lever is turned down the end of the lever 15 will engage the finger 14 and cause 'the outer ends 4 of the clasp to separate,- the two members being substantially hinged together by the engagement of the tail 13 in the slot 9. Instead of providing the .finger 14,120 engage with the end 15 of the lever aflat spring 16 may be arranged between the members of the clasp, as
shown in Fig. 4, the spring being secured to the member 6 near the outer end and'projecting rearward into engagement with the-mem-' ber 10,.the tendency of the spring belng to.
separate the members of the clasp when the lever is turned downward. i
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A garment-supporter comprisinga clasp and a buttonlever the inner end of the fixed member of the clasp bent upward and formed with a slot, the swinging member adapted at its inner end to extend into the said slot, the
lever 'pivotally connected with the ,fixed member of the clasp and carrying a button at its outer end, substantially as described.
2. A' garment-supporter comprising a clasp and a button-lever, said lever pivotally connectedwith the fixed member of the clasp and carrying a button at its outer end the inner end of the' fixed member of the clasp-turned inward and formed with a transverse slot, the
swinging member adapted at its inner end to I extend through said slot, said swinging memspecification in the presence of two subscribing ber formed with a finger extending into the witnesses. path of the inner end of said lever whereby as the lever is'turned its inner end will engage JOHN BUCHANAN 5 with said finger and separate the outer ends Witnesses:
of'the clasp, substantially as described. MINNIE M. M. TRIPP,
In testimony whereof I have signed this WM. L. KING.
