PATENT OFFICE.
DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,101, dated March 8, 1904.
y Application filed July 20,1903. serial N0. 166,311. (remodel.)
To all whom] it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. STROMBERG, a citizen of Sweden, and a resident of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'improvements in drums, and it is applicable to ordinary drums, as well as to orchestra snare-drums, tympany drums, &c.;- and it has for its object the adjustment of the beater and snare heads one independent of the other, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drum. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the clamping device for independently tightening the beater and snare heads. Eig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, showing the lower clamping-screw in elevation. Fig. 4 is a partial interior view of the drum, showing the reinforcing-piece that is arranged opposite Ato each of the screwthreaded brackets. Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section on the line 5 5 shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and Eig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the hoop-clamps.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the shell of the drum, as usual, provided with upper and lower straining-hoops B C and corresponding flesh-hoops D E,to which the respective beaterhead and snare-head E Cr are attached in the usual manner. Midway upon the outside of the shell A are attached at proper distances apart the brackets H H, each one being provid ed with steady-pins L k, fitted into perforations or recesses in the shell A, as shown in Fig. 3. Opposite to each such bracketH is arranged on the inside of the shell A a strengthening piece or block I, preferably glued or otherwise attached to the inside of said shell. K K are headed screws going loosely through perforations in said strengthening-piece and head A and screwed into screw-threaded perforations or recesses in the brackets H, as shown in Eig. 5, by which means said brackets are firmly secured in place on the exterior of the shell A. Each bracket H is provided with two vertical screw-threaded perforations 7L lt", arranged parallel with each other at a suitable distance apart, as shown in Eig. 5.
The independent clamping devices for the respective beater and snare heads E Gr are constructed as follows: Onto the upper edge of the straining -hoop B are hooked the forked prongs Z Z, made integral with a perforated sleeve or socket L, through which is loosely journaled the clamping-screw M, provided at its upper end with a polygonal head m, supported on the sleeve or socket L, as shown. The screw-threaded end of the tightening-bolt M engages the screw-threaded portion 7L of the bracket H, as shown. L Z Z' M m are corresponding clamping devices for the straininghoop C, like the corresponding ones on the straining-hoop B, it being noticed that the clamping-screws M IWI' are not arranged in alinement, but arranged Side by side, corresponding to the positions of thescrew-threaded perforations L t in the bracket H, by which arrangement I am enabled to tighten the beater-head E and its strainer-hoop B in dependently of the tightening of the snare-head Cr and its-straining-hoop C. This is a great advantage over the usual devices for this purpose, in which the tightening-screws are arranged in alinement with each other, causing the ends of the tightening-screws to come in contact with each other and preventing a proper tightening of the beater and snare heads. l
The heads are independently tightened by means of a suitable key applied to the screwheads m m, as is usual in drum-head-tightening devices. s
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In a drum, in combination, a shell, beater, and snare heads, and straining-hoops arranged at opposite ends of said shell, a series of brackets secured to the latter and engaging shell, and screwed into the bracket, substanindependent clamping devices, each of said brackets having steady-pins L, L, interlocked with corresponding recesses in the shell, a strengtheningblock arranged on the interior of the shell opposite to said bracket and headed screws K, K, going loosely through perforations on said strengthening-block and tially as and for the purpose set forth. IO
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. STROMBERG. Vitnesses:
ALBAN ANDRN, MARY McGLosKEY.
