FOLDING TAB LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,663, dated March 1, 1904. Application filed June 6,1903. Serial No. 160,361. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLAMAzoN' W. BRIGHTWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owen, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding tables; and the object of the same is to construct a table of this character which will be a combined dresser, dining, and card table.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my table horizontal. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same when used as a dresser. Fig. 3 is atransverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is alike view of same used as a dresser. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of my table. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. 5.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a rectangular frame-comprisingtwo leg members 2, connected at their extremities by cross-bars 3 and 4. Two frames 1 are employed in the construction of my table and are placed X fashion and pivoted centrally the leg members 2 on a horizontal axle-bar 5.
Mounted on the frames 1 and hinged to the cross-bars 1 is a top 6, comprising two sections 7, secured together by hinges 8, mounted onthe under sides thereof and located in alinement with and in the same vertical plane as the axle 5. A transverse aperture 9 is formed in the axle 5 to accommodate a propbar 10, connected at its upper end to the leaves 7 by hinges 11 and having shoulders 12 formed thereon. A thumb-screw 13, mounted in an aperture in the axle 5, bears at'its inner end on the prop 10 and serves to secure it against longitudinal movement. By means of the prop 10 and set-screw 13 the sections 7 may be held tilted up at any angle To adapt my table to be used as a dresser or a reading-table, two leaves 14 and 15 are hinged at 7 to the sections7 adjacent to their inner edges. The leaf 14. covers a lookingglass 16, seated in an aperture in one section 7 of the top, while the leaf 15 covers a writing-tablet 17, such as a slate or blackboard seated in an aperture in the other section 7 of the top.
When in use as a card or dining table, the sections 7 are lowered to extend horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, and the set-screw 13 clamped to hold the prop 10 against longitudinal movement and thereby'the top 6 against buckling.
When used as a dresser or book-rest, the
g I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' A table comprising pivoted-together leg members, top-sections hinged intermediately of their meeting and opposite edges to said leg members at the upper ends of the last mentioned, a propping-bar having opposite upper edges hinged to said top-sections, at their meeting edges, said propping-bar being vertically movable through the pivotal connection between said legs, and means for effecting the vertical adjustment of said proppingbar and the retention of said propping-bar against movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 'nesses.
