PATENT OFFICE.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 753,366, dated March 1, 1904:.
Application filed May 7, 1903. Serial No. 156,058. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. 000K, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ingersoll, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to plows, and particularly to the subclass thereunder known as clevises.
An object of the invention is to produce a I clevis which will comprise few parts, in which the said clevis is readily attached in place or removed by an operator.
Furthermore, an object of the invention is to produce a clevis comprising a single piece of metal shaped to form a body and in combination therewith a securing-link pivoted to one end of the body and interlocked to the other end of the body.
Furthermore, an object of the invention is to produce a clevis in which the link is retained against accidental displacement in a novel manner, yet permitting the said link to be attached by a single pull on the said link. Furthermore, an object of. the invention is to produce a clevis of the character noted which will possess advantages in points of utility, efliciency, strength, and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and com- In the drawings, A denotes the eye formed on the end of the upturned portion A of the clevis-body, the. said clevis body having one end terminating in an eye A to which a link B is pivoted. The end of the link is adapted to fit over the eye A and is held thereon by a pin E. The upturned portion A is of resilient metal in order that it may yield to permit the link'to pass over the surface. In this form the spring action of the portion A causes the said portion to bear against the link and prevent movement of the link.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 I form the clevis-body of a single piece of metal with the member F bent to formthe shoulder G, and the other end of the member has an eye H.
The link I has a hooked end fitted in the eye of the end of the body, forming a hinge, and the opposite end of the link has a hook which fits over the curved end of the member F to engage the shoulder G. I find in practice, especially with clevises designed for use on light Work, that the member F can be sufficiently resilient as to permit the link to be applied and removed without the exercise of undue force, and this form is easily applied and removed and does away with the use of the pin. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clevis a body having a member bent to form a shoulder, a link hinged to one end of the body and having an eye fitted over the shoulder and held frictionally.
2. In a clevis, a body having a member bent to form a shoulder, a link hinged to one end of the body and having an eye fitted over the shoulder and held frictionally and a supplemental retaining means comprising a pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 20thday of April, 1903.
BENJAMIN W. COOK.
