To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN SKELLENGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whiting, in the count-y of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grate Attachments, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to gates, and particularly to means for automatically shutting a gate; and the primary object of the same is to provide simple and eective means for positively closing a gate or an analogous device and by the same means to lock the gate ori other closure in shut condition or fully open, as may be desired. f
' The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a farm-gate, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through a part of the gate connecting-bar and a tubular post in which said bar has movement. Fig. 3 is a section through the post, taken in a plane at right angles to the section shown by Fig. 3. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the post above the -weight therein.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The improved mechanism, which will be fully hereinafter set forth, is intended to be applied to any style of gate or to a door, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with arm and yard gates.
A tubular post 1 is erected in stationary position near the hinged eXtremit yof the gate, and consists of a suitable length of pipe. The upper end of the post is cut away to form centrally-upstanding arms 2, to which a cap 3 is secured, and has a central pin-opening 4. By forming the arms as stated opposite portions of the lower extremity of the post below the cap are left open to provide a guideway for a connecting-bar 5, preferably formed of channel-iron. This connecting-bar is movably attached to the gate or other closure 6 and has its opposite endA movably inserted' through the upper open extremity of the post. i
A horizontally-disposed roller 7 is rotatably mounted in the upper extremity of the post at the base of the opening in the latter, and the connecting-bar 5 rides over and is held in continual contact with said roller. The ends of the roller are flared upwardly, as at 8, to produce guards which prevent the connectingbar from riding over the ends of the roller. A cable or other analogous device 9 is attached to the end of the connecting-bar 5, which moves through the post and depends over the roller and has a weight 10 secured tov its lower end. The cable or analogous device 9 engages the portion of the roller nearest the gate or closure 6, so that the weight will always operate to close the gate when the connecting-bar is free to movethrough the upper end of the post.
Attached to the cap Shy a flexible connector 11-of suitable form is a pin 12, adapted to be inserted through the opening 4 in the cap and engage openings 13 and 14 at opposite eX- tremities of the connecting-bar, the opening 13 being. in the end of the bar which moves through the post, and the opening 14 is close to the gate. When the gate is closed, the opening 13 will be in vertical alinement with the opening 4 in the cap 3, and by inserting the pin through both openings 4 and 13 movement of the gate will be obstructed. When the gate is opened, the bar 5 slides through the upper* extremity of the post, and if it is desired to hold the gate in immovable open condition the opening 14 is caused to aline with the opening I in the cap 3, and the pin 12 is then inserted through both openings.
The several parts of the improved gate or door opening means are simplein their construction and can be readily applied.
It is well known that it is objectionable to have a gate controlling the entrance to ayard open outwardly over a sidewalk and stand in open condition, and to overcome these disadvantages the post will be arranged inside of the yard areaY .close to the hinged end of the gate and operate under normal-conditions to automatically close the gate.

minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new isw l. The combination with a closure, of a tubular post at a distance therefrom having an opening through the upper extremity thereof and a closing-cap, a roller mounted in the upper extremity of the post below the cap, a connectingbar formed of channel-iron and Inovably attached at one end tol the closure andfreely slidable through the open extremity of the post on the roller, the channeled side of the connecting-bar being in engagement with the roller, and a weight movably inclosed within the post and attached to the bar by a flexible device which moves over the roller and is held within the under channeled side of the said bar.
2. The combination with a closure, of a tubular post having an upper open extremity and a cap thereover with a pin-opening therein, a connecting-bar movable through the upper open extremity of the post below the cap and also movably attached to the closure, a weight movably held within the post and having a flexible connecting meansengaging the roller, the connecting bar having openings therein to aline with the opening in the cap, and a pin for removable insertion through the cap into the connecting-bar to lock the closure either in open or shut position.
