Description

@Sluiten faire @anni @frn EDWARD A. SMITH, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN 4W. NEWTON.
Letters Patent No. 75,306, dated March 10, 1868.
one
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS POR HARVESTERS.
TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SMITH, of St. Albans, in the State of Vermont, have` invented and made a. certain new and useful Improvement iu Seats for Mowing and Reaping-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is an inverted plan of the seat-supporter, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section ofthe seat and supporter.
' Similar letters denote the same parts.
The seats of mowing and reaping-machines are usually very uncomfortable for the rider, in consequence ofthe same being more or less rigid, andreceiving the jar and tremor of the machine as it rolls upon the ribbed wheels and over unevensurf'aces. L
The nature of my said invention consists in a seat for mowers and reapers, formed with helical springs introduced between the seat and the supporting-bar, the ends of said springs being received in sockets on the respective parts, and the seat and bar being held together by a screw-link that allows the parts to move freely, `but prevents them from separating when in use. By this construction a cheap, easy, strong, and reliable seat is obtained, and one that has a free vertical and lateral motion, thus relieving the driver from the unpleasant jarusual in the seats heretofore employed.
In the drawing, a represents the seat-supporter, formed at one end with a foot, b, to bo attached to the reaper or mower, and at the other end with the iiange e, that receives the crown-plate cl, upon which are sockets e, for the springsf, standing around in a. circular range. gis the scat, of a suitable size and shape, with sockets L upon the under side, for `the upper ends of the springsf. A screw-link, z', connects the seat y with the supporter-flange c. The hole through which such link passes is Asufficiently large to allow the parts to move freely as the seat-springs yield to concussion or pressure.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The seat for mowers or reapers, formed with sockets on the under side of the seat, receiving helical or spiral springs,- in combination with the sockets on thc crown-piece or seat-supporter, aud with the connectinglink i, substantiallyfas and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this ifteenth day of November, A. D. 1867.
