UNITED STATES Patented February 23, 1904.
CHARLES W. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SKYLIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,869, dated February 23, 1904.
Application filed May 29, 1903' Serial No. 159,350. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skylights; and I do hereby declare the following 'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in skylights, and has for its object to produce a construction of the class described which will be adjustable, extensible, and collapsible for the purpose of convenient and inexpensive packing and shipping. In the accomplishment of these objects I employ the novel construction hereinafter fully illustrated and described,
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sectional views of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of parts of my construction. Fig. 6 is a modification of my improved construction.
In the several views like letters of reference designate similar parts of my construction.
A A designate the supporting-frame of my construction, the same being rectangular or of any other suitable form. Each side of said supporting-frame comprises two portions (0 a, one of which is provided with suitable grooves a a and the other with tongues a a adapted to slide in said grooves.
B B are a suitable number of converging ribs secured at one end to said supportingframe A A and at their other end to a chimney portion C. Each of said ribs B B and each side of said chimney portion C also comprises two portions, one of which is slidably mounted on the other, as illustrated, b 6 rep resenting the two portions comprising each of said ribs B, said portions 6 6 being provided with grooves 5'7) and tongues 6 .72 and c 0 designating the two parts of each side of said chimney portion C, said parts 0 0 being provided with grooves 0 0 and tongues 0 As shown in the modification, Fig. 6, if desirable the two portions comprising each ribv may be made the same size and slidably mounted inan extra section, as shown at D. It is obvious that the two portions of each side of the supporting-frame and chimney portion may also be so constructed as to slide in an extra section, which sections may be made in.
any desirable lengths.
' It should be understood that although I illustrate my improvement applied to a hipped skylight it may be equally as-well applied to any other form, such as the flat or louver skylight, and also to the various styles of ventilators which are used in connection with such devices. of parts myconstruction may be adjusted to fit any size frame or opening, and when it has been properly adjusted the two or more parts of each rib, &c., may be retained in place by, any suitable means, as by soldering the same together to produce a rigid frame in which glass may be secured in any well-known manner. It is also obvious that my improved skylight and ventilator may be readily taken apart before soldering to enable the same to be conveniently and inexpensively packed and shipped.
Although I illustrate and describe the tongue-and-groove construction, I do not wish to limit myself to the use of same, as other well-known means may be used to accomplish the same result.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
l. A skylight provided with an extensible supporting-frame, and a plurality of extensible glass-supporting ribs connected to said frame and extending above the plane of the frame substantially as described.
2. A skylight provided with a supportingframe and a plurality of glass-supporting ribs connected therewith and extending above the plane of the frame, each member of said frame and each of said ribs comprising a plurality of parts extensibly connected together substantially as described.
3. A skylight provided with a supportingframe and a plurality of glass-supporting ribs connected therewith and extending above the plane of the frame, each member of said frame and each of said ribs comprising a plurality It is evident that by this arrangement of separable parts eXtensibly connected together substantially as described.
4:. A skylight comprising a supporting frame, a second frame above the supporting frame and ribs connecting said frames, each member of said frames and each of said ribs being extensible substantially as described.
5. A skylight comprising a supportingframe, glass-supporting ribs connected therewith and extending above the frame, said frame having members composed of two or more parts extensibly connected substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described, comprising among its members a supporting-frame, ribs and a chimney portion, each of said members being separable and adjustable, substantially as described.
7. A device of the class described comprising among its members, a supporting-frame, a chimney portion, ribs connecting said frame and chimney portion, the sides of said frame and chimney portion and said ribs each comprising two or more portions, slidably mounted one upon the other and adapted to being detached from the same, substantially as described.
8. A device of the class described comprising among its members, a supporting-frame, a chimney portion, converging ribs connecting said frame and chimney portion, the sides of said frame and chimney portion and said ribs each comprising two or more portions, one or more of which are providedwith grooves and the others provided with tongues adapted to slide in said grooves and to be disengaged from same, substantially as described.
9. A device of the class described comprising among its members, a supporting-frame, a chimney portion, converging ribs connecting said frame and chimney portion, the sides of said frame and chimney portion and said ribs each comprising two or more portions, one or more of which are provided with grooves and the others provided with tongues adapted to slide in said grooves and to be disengaged from same, and means for retaining said slidable portions in place, substantially as described.
10. A device of the class described comprising among its members, a supporting-frame, a chimney portion, converging ribs connecting said frame and chimney portion, the sides of said frame and chimney portion and said ribs each comprising two portions, one of said portions being provided with grooves and the other being provided with tongues adapted to slide in said grooves and to be disengaged from same, and means for retaining said slidable portions in place, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
