COMBINED FENDER AND BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 12, 1911. Serial No. 626,873.
and blower for fire places, grates and the like heating means.
The ob ect of my lnvention 18 to produce a device that will perform the functions of a blower and also those of a fender.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated the best forms in which I have contemplated embodying my invention and my said'invention is disclosed in the following description and claims.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention when used as a fire place fender. Fig. 2 is a like View of the device when used as a blower. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the device adapted for use as a fender and blower for a grate. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 55, Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section on line 66, Fig. 4:. Fig. 7 is a partial view illustrating details of construction. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of Fig. 5 illustrating the grooves in which the plates slide.
In the form designed for use with fire places shown in Fig. 1, myimproved device is composed of three parts, the front A, and the wings B, B hinged thereto. The front consists of a light metal frame a to which is secured a wire netting or fabric a, filling or covering the entire space within the frame. The wings are each composed of a frame .7), the lower half of which is filled or covered with wire netting or fabric 6 of the same or similar character as that ap-.
plied to the front. The upper half of the frame is filled or covered with sheet metal 6 Outside of these filling panels the vertical frame bars are grooved to receive a vertically sliding panel 5 The lower side bar of the front frame is recessed at a to receive a short bar a pivoted therein so as to be swung into alinement with the frame bar or at an angle thereto. The Wings B are half the length of the front, so that they can be swung inward against the inner side of the front and lie flatly against it, entirely coveringthe inner side of the same.
hen it is desired to use the device as a fender, the wings B, B are turned at an angle to the front A, as shownin Fig. 1, and the free sides or edges of the Wings are placed against the jambs of the fire place. When the device is to be used as a blower the wings B, B are folded against the front as shown in Fig. 2. The device thus folded is then placed across the front of the fire place, the bar a being turned at a right or other angle to the frame to form a foot to maintain the device in a perpendicular position. By folding the wings against the front, the upper half of the same is closed by the sheet metalv panels 6 of the wings, leaving the wire net-ting or fabric of the lower half free to admit air to the'fire place. The extent of this inletspace may be ,reduced to any extent desired by depressing the sliding panels 6 to such point as will give the result desired. If the sliding panels b 6 are forced downward to the bottoms of their frames the draft will be practically out off and the fire can then be left for an indefinite period in a smoldering or slow burning condition. When it is desired to store the fender or transport the same, the wings are folded as described and the bar or foot a turned into a-linement.
with the frame, in which condition it will occupy but little space.
In Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive, I have shown a modified form of my combined fender and blower, designed for use with grates, more especially with such as project more or less from the chimney breast. This modification of my device can be constructed in many different ways. The form shown comprises a semi-cylinder of wire gauze or netting supported by a suitable frame, a series of overlapping plates being employed to partly cover the wire gauze or netting when it is desired to have it act as a blower.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing A is the supporting frame surmounted by the hood A 6, e, e, e are the overlapping sliding plates for easing thefront ofthe device when it is to be used as a blower. These plates have ,their ends engaging grooves (Z in the top bar a and bar 03. The sliding plates are moved outward from the center to open the device to act as a fender and the grooves are increased in width from the center outward to accommodate the plates as they are moved outward, as shown in Fig. 6. The space between bars cl and cl may also be provided with covering and closing means, if so desired. Instead of having the device in the form shown, it may be made to curve inwardly from the bottom toward the top and the hood reduced in size to conform to such a change. The plates 6 except the end ones of each series are formed with reversely turned edges as shown in Fig. 6 so that the moving of the inner plate will bring the others of the series to their proper places, when it is desired to close the fender to have it act as a blower.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fender comprising a portable structure having the greater portion of its extent formed of wire netting, said structure adapted to engage a chimney breast on each side of a fire-place, said chimney breast engaging portions being provided with im perforate plates capable of being'moved toward the opposite side of the structure to cover the whole or a part of the netting of the fender to form a blower.
2. In a fender, the combination with a main frame having the space within the same closed by wire netting, of wings or side frames hinged thereto and adapted to fold upon said main frame and cover the same, said side frames being provided with imperforate material to close the main portion of the netting of the main frame.
3. In a fender of the class described, the combination with a main frame closed or covered by a wire netting, of hinged wings adapted to fold closely upon the main frame said wings having space within the same closed by wire netting and imperforate plates for variably closing such netted space.
4. A fender having a main frame pro vided with wire netting closing space within the same and a wing pivoted to, each end of said main frame and adapted to be folded upon one side of said main frame, said wings being provided with wire netting and imperforate plates movable to variably cover the wire netting of said wings.
5. In a fender, the combination with a main frame having the space within the same closed by wire netting, of side frames hinged thereto and adapted to fold upon said main frame and cover the whole of the same, said side frames being provided with imperforate plates movable to different positions to close the wire netting of the fender to varying extents to form a blower.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
