PATENT OFFICE.
DOLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,607, dated February 16, 1904.
V I Application filed July 25, 1903. Serial No. 166,992. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. TI-IOWLESS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved toy adapted when controlled by'the operator to imitate the motions and movements of men or animals.
It relates particularly to a device that can be employed by children as a plaything.
The general feature of my invention consists in removing from the complete figure of a doll or toy certain portions, the removed portions being supplied by the fingers of the operator,
which fingers can be made to simulate the movements of limbs or members. The various parts necessary may, however, be made separately, and the fingers will then supply the missing links.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a view of a doll some portions of which have been removed and their place supplied by the operators fingers. Fig. 2 shows a back view of the doll of Fig. 1 and the arrangement of the various parts; Fig. 3, a figure of an elephant, illustrating the use of the operators two or four fingers; Fig. 4, a view of the doll with fingers inserted.
In the drawings, A is the body of the figure; B, the cut-away portion; C, an elastic or other strip for holding the operators hand in position; D, strips detachably connecting the body A with the feet E; G, the fingers of the operator. The strip C need not be continuous, but may be formed of one or more pieces of metal bent round to form a hook or hooks for the fingers to catch in.
The operation of the device is apparent from the drawings. The fingers are inserted in the space left therefor in the figure, the fingers forming the legs, and by proper manipulation the figure can be made to'go through the motions of walking, running, dancing, or any other desired movements.
Having thus fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a toy, the combination of a hollow, incomplete body portion, provided with a fingerholding strip or strips, so located at the rear of the body portion as to enable the manipulator of the toy to complete the figure by means of his fingers, and simulate the motion of body members thereby.
2. In a toy, the combination of a hollow body-piece adapted to receive a portion of the human hand, a strip for holding the hand in position, one or more fingers forming the 10- comotive organs of said toy, substantially as set forth.
3. In a toy, the combination of a hollow body portion, a fingers-holding strip fitted across said hollow portion, detachable feet, and bands connecting said feet with the hollow body portion, substantially as described.
4. In a toy, the combination of a hollow
