UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA HAZELBAKER, OF KQKOMO, INDIANA.
ABDOMINAL BELT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 752,548, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed November 23, 1903. Serial No. 182,377. (No model.) i i To all whom it Wmj concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA HAZELBAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Belts; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in abdominal belts or bands worn by corpulent females for holding down the corset or corsetwaist and supporting the abdomen.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device of this character which will not only keep the lower portion of the corset in its proper place, but will also support and hold the abdomen and hips down in their natural positions, so as to reduce their apparent size without the least discomfort or injury to the wearer.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved abdominal belt, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rear of the same. 'Fig. 3 is a View of the belt detached from the corset or waist and opened out into a plane.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings I provide two front half-sections l and 2, having their front ends detachably connected with each other and their rear ends adjustably connected by a strap or band 3. Each of said half-sections which engage the abdomen and hips of the wearer comprises horizontal or longitudinal converging straps or hands 4:, preferably three in number, which have their front or diverging ends sewed or otherwise secured to a vertical connecting front piece 5 and their rear or converging ends brought together and secured in an elongated ring or loop 6, so that each of said sections 1 and 2 is substantially triangular in shape and adapted to engage the abdomen and hips at the bottom edge of the corset or corset-waist A usually worn by females. The front attaching-pieces 5 have their meeting edges detachably connected by any suitable fastening. devices, preferably by hooks and eyes 7 as shown, and, if desired, they may be stiffened and strengthened by a bone or steel. The three straps i are connected and spaced apart at about their centers by a vertical connecting-piece 9, the upper ends of which, if so desired, may be sewed or otherwise attached to the corset, as at a, to hold the belt in its proper position.
The rear strap 3 has each of its ends passed through one of the loops 6 and then secured to a pivoted jaw-clasp 10, similar in construction to an ordinary suspender clasp or buckle, which slides and is adjusted upon the central portion of said strap 3 to vary the length of the same, and thereby adjust the belt upon the body of the wearer. If desired, this rear strap may be held in its proper position and prevented from slipping up or down by passing the same through loops 6, secured to the back of the corset A.
The use and advantages of my invention willbe apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that the device will hold the bottom of the corset and also the abdomen and hips down in their natural and proper positions, thereby reducing their apparent size and giving the wearer as graceful a figure as possible. The device not only holds the abdomen and hips down, but it also supports the abdomen and braces the back of the wearer. The device may be readily adjusted by means of the strap 4 and clasps 10 to fit almost any stout woman, and it may be quickly applied and removed by means of the fastening devices 7.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the construction herein shown and described, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construc tion may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described, comprising two half-sections each composed of longitudinal converging pieces or straps having their diverging ends connected by a vertical attaching piece or strip and their converging ends united by a loop or ring, means for detachably connecting said vertical pieces or strips, a strap or band having its ends passed through said loops or rings, and clasps for adjusting the ends of said straps,-substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, comprising two half-sections each composed of longitudinal converging pieces or straps havsaid vertical pieces or strips, a spacing piece or strip connecting said longitudinal pieces or' strips, a strap having its ends passed through said loops, and clasps upon the ends of said strap for adjusting the same, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a corset or the like, having guide-loops attached to its back portion, of an abdominal belt comprising two half-sections each composed of longitudinal nesses.
