Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a platform having standards 2 and 3 arranged thereon, the standard 3 being provided in one face with a longitudinally-extending groove 4. A cross-bar 5 is secured upon standards 2 and 3 and has a passage 6 extending longitudinally therethrough from the groove 4 in standard 3 to the center of the cross bar, and within this passage are journaled pulleys 7. The side walls of the groove 4; are recessed for the reception of flanges 8, extending from the sides of a slide 9, arranged within the groove 4, and the outer face of this slide has a handle 10,'whereby it maybe readily manipulated. A plunger 11 ex= tends transversely through the handle 10' and the slide 9 and projects into a rec ss 24, formed in theinner face of the slide 9. Aspiring-catch 25, preferably formed of a strip of material hav ing an inwardly-extending projection 26; issecured at one end to the rear wall of the groove 4 and the inwardly-projecting end thereof is slidabl yrnounted in a'recess 27, formed in the rear wall of said groove.-

Simultaneouslywith the arrival of the cover 20 upon the platform 1 the recess 2 1 in slide 9 comes into position over the free end of strip 25, and said end promptly swings outward into the recess and locks the slide against downward movement. If the cord 13 should contract or'expand, the exact distance from the locked slide to the. cover can be covered by screwing the stem 16 downward or upward within the nut 15. The locking-strip 25 prevents accidental raising of the cover 20, and in order to raise said cover it is first necessary to depress the plunger 11, so as to force the prO ecting end of said strip into the recess 27 and out of the recess 24. The

slide can then be moved downward by grasp-- ing the handle thereof, and this downward movement will raise the cover. As the weight 19 is equalto the weight of cover 20, it is obvious that said cover will be automatically held in any position to which it may be adjusted. The slide and its operating mechanism are located at the back of the device and out of reach of persons who are notauthorized to remove the cover from its. loweredposition. The catch in the slide serves to support the weight of the counterbalance 19, and thereby permits the cover 20 to rest firmlyon the platform. I, p v

. It will be seen that the device is extremely simple in construction and will form "an at tractive article of furniture for use in stores. Any desired means may be provided for permitting the ventilation of thecoverfwhen the same is in positionupon the platform. We preferably provideap erti1res 22 within the platform, (shown by dotted lines inFig.1,) sa id apertures communicating with the grooves extending along the lower surface of the plat- 4 form and indicated'by the numeral 23.

In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; butwe 4 do not limit ourselves theretoQas we. are aware that modifications may be made thereinwithout departing from; the spirit or. sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and wetherefore reserve the right to make such' changes as fairly fall Within the scope of our invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is ,1. The'combination with a platform having standards thereon and a cross-bar onthes tandards; of a slide mounted on one ofthestandards, a cord connected to the slide and depending from the cross-bar,a cover adj ustably connected to and supported by the cordfand a counterbalance connected to the slide.

2. The combination witha platform having standards thereon, and a cross-bar on the standards; of a slide mounted upon one of the standards, means for locking the slide in adjusted position, a cord connected to the slide and depending from the cross-bar, a cover adjustably connected to said cord and supported thereby, and a counterbalance connected to the slide. I

3. The combination with a platform; of a grooved standard thereon, a cross-bar mounted 'upon the standard, a slide upon the standard, means for locking the slide against downward movement within the standard, a plungeron the slide adapted to release the slide from the locking means, acord secured to the slide and depending from the cross-bar, a cover adjustably connected to and supported by said cord, anda counterbalance connected to theslide.

4. Thecombination with a platform; of a 'longi tiidinally-greovedfstandard thereon, a

5. The combination with a platform; of
