. Be it known that I, WLLLIAMl-RANDOLBH, J r., a'cit izen of the United States, residing at Newton; in *the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improve:
. ment in Couplings for Threshing-Machines,
&c., of which the following is a; specification.
My invention relates: to couplers, and'ises- I pecially directedtoa device of this character designed for use in connection with threshing-' machines, but which'may beemployed for coupling cars orthe like, and has for itsobjects to produce a device of this-character which will be simple of construction, efiicient in operation, one in which the coupling-jaws will automatically move into coupling engage ment, and one in'which the jaw-holding lever may he-readily manipulated for releasing the aws.
To these ends the invention comprises'the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top sectional plan of acoupler embodying my invention in itspreferred form, thepartsf being'shown incoupled position. Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the platform of a traction-engineor the like, and 2 a portion of the tender or other vehicle'which ,is coupled thereto. These parts are conventionally shown for the'purpose of illustrating the operation of the coupler whichconstitutes the essence of'myinvention. Y

The top and bottom plates of the draw-head areeach recessed from its outer end inward, as at 13, said recess forming a guide which terminates in a substantially circular opening 14, which in practice receives the pin 7 when the parts are in coupled position. indicatesthe primary coupling-jaw, which is mounted between the top and bottom plates of the draw-head and pivoted upon a vertical transverse pin 16. Said jaw is provided with a coupling knuckle or finger 17, which in practice extends across the guide-recess 13 in advanceof the pin-receiving opening'l to prevent escape of the pin, the end of the jaw beveled face for the finger 17. The jaw is afurther provided with a lateral inwardly-extending finger 19, which normally lies in rear of the pin-receiving opening 14-. in position as will be more fully'herein'after explained. The upper face of the jaw 15 is recessed, as at the inner edge of the jaw an inclinedstop 21, and'the jaw is further provided at its inner end with a rearwardly-extending finger 22, the purpose of all of which parts will presently which is mounted between the top and bottom plates of the draw-headand-ispivotedupon a pin 24, saidjaw being provided-with an in vwardly extending finger 25', having a front ing arranged to overlie the finger 19 and to extend within the recess 20 and have its inner end bear upon the inclined stop 21 of the primary jaw. The jaw 23 has its lower face in advance of the finger 17 being beveled or inclined, as at 18, to constitute'an outer to be acted upon by the incoming pin forthrowing the jaw 15 into its coupling position,

29 indicates a lever mounted between thetop and bottom plates ofthe draw-head tra'ns versely thereof and pivoted upon a pin 80, said lever being provided adjacent toone end}, with a notch or recess forming a shoulder 31 for engaging the finger 22' of the jaw 15 to; maintain the parts in coupled position, shown in Fig. 1. In this connectionit is be noted that when the jaw swings to coupling position the block -12 constitutes a stop with which the finger 22 contacts to check-it at proper position for engagement by. the shoulder 81 of the lever, and that when the jaw is releasedand swung outward the block 12 serves as a stop to prevent the forward end of the jaw swinging laterally beyond the head,
- 32 is a spring coiled upon the pin 30 and having a spring-arm 33, which normally holds the lever in engaging position, and with a second arm 34:, which engages the secondary jaw 23 for maintaining the same in such .po-. sition that the stop 28 will normally lie in the path of the finger 19.
