ANIMAL-POKE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 752,134, dated February 16, 1904.
Y Application filed November 24, 1903. Serial No. 182,512. (No model.) y
To` @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. WEATHERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Windsor, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Pokes'; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact decription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in animal-pokes; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which will effectually prevent an animal wearing the same from jumping or going over fences, means being provided to allow the poke to yield when coming against an obstruction.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the. accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my poke. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the manner of connection of the yoke and the upper portion of the poke. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4L is a detail in perspective of a portion of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a hookshaped poke, one end of which is bent to form a hook A', and B designates a strip of metal which is riveted to the shank portion of the bar A at a, and Bf designates pricking-plates, one end of which is fastened to the shank portion of the poke-bar and the other to the plate B.
D D designate two strips, the former of which is bent at one end to form a hook E, designed to engage over the edge of the shank portion of the poke-bar A to limit the forward throw of the same.
F F designate headed rivets which connect the ends of the strips D and D', respectively,
with `the ends of the shank portion of the poke-bar and the strip B. Springs N are coiled about each of the rivets F, and the hook N is formed at the upper end of each wire, forming a spring, and one of said hooks is adapted to engage over the edge of the shank portion of the poke-bar, while the hook at the upperend of the other spring is designed to engage over the edge of the strip B. The purpose of said springs is to returnthe yoke portion of the poke to its normal forward position when said poke-bar has been thrown rearward, the hook at the end of the plate D being provided for limiting the forward throw of the poke-bar. A pivot-pin Q is mounted near the lower ends of the two strips D and D', and a coiled spring R is mounted upon said pin Q and has one end bent to form a hook R', adapted to engage and hold the hooked bar T in the position shown in the drawings and allowing said bar T, which is mounted upon the pivot, to yield. The upper throw of the bar T is limited by the inner hooked end t coming in contact with a pin S, which is mounted in the extreme lower ends of the strips D and D. Said inner end y t is provided with a spur z5', which, as the hook of the bar T is thrown rearward, is adapted to prick the under edge of the. neck of the animal. One end of the spring which is mounted upon the pivot-pin Q is bent to form a hook A and is bent over the edge of the strip D,
as shown clearly in the drawings.
In the drawings I have shown a modified form of bar W, which may be applied to the lower ends of the strips D and D for use instead of the hooked bar T and de signed especially for use to prevent animals creeping through or under wire fences when the animal is not in the habit of jumping, While I have shown a particular construction of apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An animal-poke comprising a poke-bar TOO hooked at one end, a bar B secured thereto, prieking-plates secured to said bars, pivotpins carried by said bars, strips pivotally mounted upon said pins, one of said strips being bent upon itself at its upper end to form a hook designed to engage over the shank portion of said poke-bar, springs adapted to hold said poke-bar at its forward throw, as set forth.
2. An animal-poke comprising a polie-bar hooked at one end, a bar B secured thereto, headed pivot-pins carried by said bars, strips pivotally mounted upon said pins, the upper end of one of said strips being bent to form a hook adapted to engage over the rear edge of the shank portion of said poke-bar, a spring coiled about each of said pivot-pins, the upper ends of said springs being bent to form hooks to engage over the edges of said bar to hold the poke-bar in its normal position, the lower ends of said springs being bent to form hooks surrounding said strips, a pivot-pin carried by said strips, a. hooked bar pivotally mounted upon said pivot-pin carried by the strip, and a spring having a hook for yieldingly supporting said hooked bar, as set forth. In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix' my signature in presence of two witnesses.
