PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT R. LAWSON, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR TO MARY C.
' GORMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOP AND STATIONERY DEVIQE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,524, dated. February 9, 1904.
Application filed. April 25, 1903. Serial No. 154,276. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern): f
Be it known thatI,RoBER'r R. LAwsoma citizen of the United States, residing at 24. Woodbine street, borough of Brooklyn, New York city, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop and Stationery Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a double envelop attached in one piece, and constitutes an envelop upon the interior side of which a message may be written and upon the other side addressed to the recipient, an inclosed envelop exactly similar which may be stamped for the return message, also a record sheet or tab to which the dual envelops are attached, with a perforated line between, the whole envelops and record sheet or tabs in the number desired being either blocked in tab form or bound together in a binding cover or book, from which one may be torn from time to time as it may be needed. The combination consists, therefore, of an envelop which when folded contains a return envelop, the outer envelop carrying the-letter or missive, and also an inclosed addressed envelop, which may be stamped, upon which the reply may be returned. At present this requirementis met, where a return message is desired, by inclosing an ordinary envelop or postal card in the letter sent; but my invention provides an inclosed envelop which may be addressed and stamped, upon the interior of which a message may be written or typewritten and then folded in envelop form and sealed. I may number each envelop in its corner to correspond with a number upon the attached record-tab, which is made fast to the cover of the book of which it is a part, and I may print upon the record-tab appropriate data, and I may print also upon the body of the envelop, which constitutes the envelop and writing-sheet for the answering message, any desired data.
I do not confine myself to any particular style of book form or covers in which I may assemble for convenience the cut envelop and sheets; but I may diversify them, making 1 them either in the form of an ordinary checkbook or in portfolio style.
It has become largely the business of certain bonding companies and insurance companies to print upon a sheet to be inclosedin a letter certain forms for a reply, with blanks to be filled in, for the convenience of the person of whom inquiry is made. My invention is designed immediately to meet this demand and for the other and general purpose of business, and it has, therefore, for its object convenience, simplicity, economy of time, and to avoid superfluous stationery.
The accompanying drawings more clearly illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a view of the complete dual letter and envelop sheet. Fig. 2 is the letter and envelop sheet folded one within the other. Fig. 3 is the dual letter and envelop sheet folded over with the first flap turned under and the sides turned over. Fig. I is a completion of the fold of the dual letter and envelop sheet in the form of an envelop. Fig. 5'is the dual sheets folded as an envelop completed and sealed.
Fig. 1 is a View of my inventionthe dual envelops. a is the record-sheet, and b the perforated line by which the envelops are attached thereto. 0 is the outer envelop, upon which the message is written, attached by the perforated line 6 to. the second envelop d, which constitutes the inclosed or return envelop. e is the perforated line between the dual envelops c and cZ.
Fig. 2 is a view of the dual envelops, the interior envelop d folded over against the exterior envelop c at the point of the perforated line 6, as shown in Fig. 1. 0 of Fig. 2 is the flap of the envelop 0 in Fig. 1, and d of Fig. 2 is the envelop-flap of d in Fig. 1. They are folded together on the perforated line 6.
Fig. 3 shows the two envelops in process of being folded together, and Fig. 4 discloses an additional fold-in the progress toward completion. i
Fig. 5 shows the envelops sealed and ready for transmission. To the flap of each envelop is a fixed adhesive gum, as is usual, and in folding the dual envelops for transmission the flap of the inclosed envelop is folded in underneath the side flaps, as shown in outline in Fig. 3, and only the gum upon the flap of the outer envelop is moistened for sealing.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. A letter-sheet and envelop combined, in dual form, attached together and capable of being folded one within the other.
2. A letter-sheet and envelop combined, in dual form attached together but with a perforated line between and capable of being folded one within the other.
3. A letter-sheet and envelop combined, in dual form attached together with a perforated line between and capable of being folded one within the other, the flap or closure of each envelop carrying an adhesive gum.
4. A letter-sheet and envelop combined, in dual form, being so attached together, with a perforated line between, that they are capable of being folded one within the other in the form of a square envelop, to present the appearance of an ordinary envelop used for transmission through the mails.
5. A letter-sheet and envelop combined, in dual form, being so attached together with a perforated line between them that they are capable of being folded one Within the other to present the form of a square and ordinary envelop the flap or closure of each of said combined dual envelops and letter-sheets having upon their edges an adhesive gum.
In testimony whereof I, ROBERT R. LAWSON, have signed my name to this specification, in
the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of April, A. D. 1903.
