ADVERTISING-ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application led November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,799.
To 117/ wlw/)z it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK G. SHUMAN, a citizen ot' the United States, reslding at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful .\dvertising-Envelop, of whlch the following is a specification.
lhe present invention appertalns to envelops, and aims to provide a novel advertising envelop. A
It is the object of this invention. to provide an envelop of unique construction, and inclosing an advertising insert or slip, which is so concealed as not to be observed, and whereby the envelops may be employed by hotels for use -by their patrons, or guests, so that the letters or envelops being mailed, will carry with them, one of the advertising inserts or slips, the envelop being of such consti-action, that when it is opened, the insert or slip will be removed with the letter or contents of the envelop, and the reclplent will have the impression that the wrlter 1nclosed the 'advertising matter, so that .in this manner the expense of the envelops will be made up by accomplished.
It is also the object of the invention, to provide an advertising envelop of the nature indicated, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction and manufacture, and which will conveniently and eiiieiently serve its intended purposes, the envelop being provided with means whereby it may be readily opened and the insert or slip withdrawn with the letter or contents, although the insert or slip is concealed prior to the sealing. ofthe envelop.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Y
The invention is ferro-d embodiment drawing, wherein A Figure l is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is folded, and illustrating the insert or slip applied thereto to be foldthe publicity or advertising illustrated in its prein the accompanying sealing flap 4, while the ends of the back l are provided with front 2 are cent the fold line between the back 1 and flaps 5. The ends of the front 2, and those ends of the flaps 5, adjacent the thereof.
In folding the blank to form the envelop, an insert or slip 7 bearing suitable advertising matter or data, is placed upon the inner side of the front 2, as suggested in Fig. l, and the inner flap 3 is then folded upon the insert or slip 7, and the back and front of the blank are then folded together, The fiaps 5 are then folded over and pasted or otherwise secured to the front 2, to complete the pocket for receiving the letter or other matter to be mailed or delivered. The closure or sealin flap 4 is left open, and is provided with g ue or adhesive material, in order that it may be swung over the mouth of the envelop, to overlap and adhere to the front 2. Vhen the envelop is completed, it will be noted that the notches 6 of the front 2, lie between the fold line between the back and front and the ends of the aps 5, so that a pencil or envelop opener may be readily inserted into one of the notches 6- for severing the envelop at the fold line between the front and back. In this connection it is to be noted that the notches 6 are provided in the front or one side of the envelop only, whereby the back or other side of the envelop assists in running or insertlng the pencil, envelop opener, or other implement between the sides of the envelop, and it being further noted that the ends of the flaps 5 also materially assist in the proper insertion of the implement into the envelop for tearing or cutting the same open.
lhen the envelop said fold line, terminate short is completed, it will contain the insert or slip 7 therein, the insert or slip being so concealed or hidden, as not to be observed by the user, the inner flap 3 extending downward over the insert provided with notches 6 adjaor* slip, to conceal the same even though the user looks into the envelop before or during the insertion of the letter or contents. The insert or slip 7 is preferably constructed of the same material as the 'envelop proper, having the same color and thickness, so that the presence of the insert or slip within theV envelop cannot be readily detected.. Then, when the letter or contents are inserted, between the back l and flap 3 and front 2, the flap 4 may be moistened and .sealed over the front 2, and the envelop then posted or mailedu The front 2 is preferably providedl with suitable lines or spaces for the name and address of the person to Whom the letter is mailed or sent, and. with instructions adjacent the notches 6 for assisting the receiver in opening the envelop properly. rlhe flap 4 may also contain the name of the hotel or other firm. or concern using the envelops, and the outer face of the back l may contain advertising matter, if desired.
lVhen the envelop or letter is received, and the saine opened by the insertion of a suitable implement into one of the notches 6, to cut thecorresponding edge of the envelop open, the insert or slip 7 will be withdrawn with the letter or contents, and the receiver will be given the impression that the personal sender or writer of the letter, inclosed the insert or slip. ln this n1anner, the envelops can be furnished gratuitously by hotels, to their guests or patrons, and the hotel will receive publicity or advertisement by the use of the envelops, so as to compensate for the expense incurred. rllfhis will render the present envelop desirable by :hotels and similar institutions, since they will be more willing to furnish the envelops to patrons, to the benefit and convenience of the patrons, and to the benet of the hotel by the publicity and advertising accruing from the use of the envelope. The advertising matter upon the insert or slip 7 may vary with the circumstances.
lt will be observed that the mouth portion, of the envelop is providedwith means for closing and concealing the insert or slip, while the opposite edge portion of the en velop is provided with means for opening the same, so that the insert or slip'will be removable with the letter or contents of the envelop.
The other advantages and capabilities of the present envelop will be obvious to those versed in the art, it is thought, Without furtherrominent being deemed necessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
n advertising envelop embodying two sides, an advertising insert within the en velop and seated against one side thereof, the. said side of the envelop having a iiap folded over the insert at the mouth 'of the envelop to conceal the insert, the other side of the envelop having flaps folded over and secured to the first mentioned side and terrninatirmT short of that edge of the envelop remote from the mouth thereof, the second mentioned side of the envelop having a closure Hap foldable over the mouth thereof and attachable to the first mentioned side, and the irst mentioned side of the envelop having notches between the said edge of the envelop and the first mentioned flaps of the second mentioned side of the envelop, whereby the said edge of the envelop may be readily cut open by the insertion of an implement and the insert withdrawn with the contents of the envelop.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own., l have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
