CQMBINEID BILLHEAD AND ENVELDP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed June 17, 1919. Serial No. 304,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IGNATIUS A. (human, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Billheads and Envelops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
' clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops of that type adapted to be folded by the user from a flat sheet and having a bill head or other message sheet integrally formed therewith and separated therefrom by fold lines whereby in preparing the envelop for mailing, the message sheet is folded within the confines of the envelop portions which are then folded and pasted together.
It is in general the object of my invention to increase the facility with which such combined envelop and message sheets may be manipulated, both' with respect to preparing the device for mailing and with respect to opening the device and detaching the bill head or other message section so that it may be filed in the usual manner.
It is a more detailed object of my invention to provide an arrangement for facilitating the introduction of a slitting member between portions of the envelop, so that the envelop may be opened.
A further and important object resides in the provision of an arrangement whereby the envelop may be closed by a minimum total expanse of paste carrying surfaces in a manner insuring complete concealment of the contents of the message sheet attached thereto. I
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides .in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined message sheet embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in perspective of the structure folded and ready for the pasting operation.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the folded and pasted structure, illustrating particularly the means for facilitating the introduction of a sealing member between portions of the envelop.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 and 6 designate respectively the front and rear wall sections of an envelop, which are connected by the fold lines 7, the front wall section 5 bein provided with a transparent window 8 0 conventional nature for exposure of the salutation of a message sheet, to form the address of the envelop. The message section 9 extends from the ends of the envelop wall sections 5 and--6, being separated therefrom by a fold line 10 extending entirely through the body sheet and separating flap sections 11 and 12 respectively at the bottom of the sheet which are divided from the message sheet 9 and wall section 6 by a fold line 13. The body sheet is thus substantially square in shape. A paste flap 14 projects from the otherwise free end'of the front wall section 5 of the envelop, extending throughout said end of the section. A second paste flap 15 extends from the top edge of the front wall section 5, said flap extending from the corner adj acent the flap 14 to a point spaced inwardly of the inner corner and between said inner corner and said point a tab 16 projects a slight distance from the section 5.
In the use of my improved device, the desired message is written on the sheet section 9, the envelop sections being folded onto the back of the section 9 if it is desiredto insert the sheet in a typewriter. The section 9, with the message written thereon is then folded on the line 10 onto the envelop sections. Said envelop sections are then folded together on the line 7 with the message section disposed therebetween. The flaps 11 and 12 thus coincide, and these flaps, as shown in Fig. 2, are then bent and tucked between the free top edge of the message sheet section and the wall section 5 of the envelop. The flaps 14 and 15 are then folded onto and pasted to the rear wall 6 of the envelop structure.
The device is thus adapted for mailing in a manner involving a most convenient manipulation, it being noted that but a pair of paste flaps are utilized and that the message is completely sealed from possible scrutiny while the sections of the structure are intact, the integral connection of one side of the message sheet section with the envelop sections serving to prevent exposure at the end of the envelop remote from the paste section 14. In opening the envelop, a pencil or other slitting member is inserted between the front wall section 5 and the flap 12, the slitting member being guided in this insertion by the tab 16 which projects from one corner of the envelop in the final folded position of its parts, as shown particularly in Fig. 8. The slitting member is then moved about the envelop, tearing the paste flaps 14 and l5. Thus the sheet may be opened out, and the message sheet section may be detached from the envelop by tearing on the fold line 10.
If desired, the flap 11 at the bottom of the message section may be eliminated without affectlng the operation of the device. Also, various changes and modifications of structure may be resorted to, .to meet differing conditions of use, without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined envelop and message sheet comprising envelop sections connected on adjacent longitudinal edges, a message sheet extending from and connected with adjacent ends of the envelop sections, a sealing flap on the otherwise free longitudinal edge of one of the envelop sections,-a sealing flap on the otherwise free end edge of one of the envelop sections, said first named sealing flap extending from an outer corner of the sheet to a point spaced from the inner end of the envelop section to which it is attached, whereby to form a space between the said flap and the inner end of the envelop section for the insertion of an opening instrument and a flap extending from the sheet extending from and connected with adjacent ends of theenvelop sections, a sealing flap on 'the otherwise free longitudinal edge of one 1 0f the envelop sections, a-sealing flap on theotherwise'free end edge of one of the envelop sections, said first named sealing flap extending from an outer corner of the sheet toa point spaced from the inner end of the envelop section to which it is attaohe'd, whereby to form a, space between the said flap and the inner end of the envelop section for the insertion. of an opening instrument, a flap extending from the otherwise free longitudinal edge of the other envelop section and adapted to be tucked between the message. sheet and the flap carrying section, to close the space between the sections of the message sheet adjacent the said opening for receiving the openinginstrument and a guide tab projecting from the envelop section betweenthe first mentioned sealing flap and the inner end of the section to which the first mentioned sealingflap is attached.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
