TO ALL 'WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Bo it known that we, JAMES S. AT'rnnnUnY and Tnouns B. ATT-unsern', of Pittsburg, in the countyot Allegheny, and State oflennsylvania, have invented a new und useful Improvement in thc Manufacture of Glass Ware; and'wc do hereby declaro that the following isa full, clear, und exact description thereof, referi enee'hei'ng had to the accompanying' drawings, making u pai-tof this specification, inwhich Figure 1 is vertical central section through'a sii-up-or cream-pitcher constructed by our improved method.
Figure 2 is a side view of the improved pitcher.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the back part of the pitcher.:
Figure 4 is u top view of the same.
Figure 5 is a. sectional view of a. portion ot'a pitcher, taken through one of the rivctholes.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the` several figures. y
The object of this inver-.tion is to produce n new. and improved molasses or crcam-pitcher,"of glass, by blowing-thc glass in a.meulilwith the' mouth or lip complete, and'with perforations throughit," by means of which a metallic hingcdcover or lid can be readily and permanently secured* to the pitcher, and fitted to -the mouth thereof, so as to producefaneat and perfectjob, as will be hereinafter described.
` To enable others skilled ,in the art to understand our invention, we will describe its construction and operation. l l In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the pitcher, whichis constructed with a Baring top, having a lip or mouth, B, by blowing glass into a. mould., which will produce such form as I have repre` .sented in the drawings, or substantially this for-m. In producing this pitcher we make indentations in it near its'laring upper edge, and nt n suitable distance apart, on each side ot' thc point, for attaching the handle C. A'.lhese indentations may beproduced `by having pins or pointed studsupon the mould, in such positions as will leave such impressions in properplace nt'ter thonet or operation of blowing` It is not expected that the pins or studs upon the nidulds will leave holes through the pitcher, but they will leave theglnss so'thin atproper points t0. make the holes, th-at with a sharp instrument the glass can be readily and safely perforated.
The handle C may be stuck to tho pitcher in any suitable manner, after which the metallic cover is insbV cned in its place. This cover consists olua. fixe-d section,.a, and a hinged section,'b. The section ais con'- structed with a lip, c, which extends below the cover portion, und is fitted snugly in contact with the mouth of the pitehcr, inside tl1ercot`,as shown in fig. 1. AThrough this internal lip, c, holes are made, so as to be opposite the holes which urefmade through .the glass, as above described, und through these holes sott metal rivets' e c are passed, which huve heads on their outer ends, and which are firmly secured in place by-mcans of a solderingiron, which will melt the inner ends ofthe rivets'and head-them, at the same 'time uniting theends to the inside of the lipe, as shown in figs. 1 and 5. This will make a firm and lsubstantial fastening, which is much n cater and better than the old mode of using cement for fastening on the covers.
By blowing the pitcher in a mould, and shaping the mputh and lip thereof in such mould, pitchers can be made of uniform shape and size, so thut their covers c'nnuberreadily fitted upon them. I
v By making the holes through'the glass, by ,the method above set forth, there will be n'o danger of hrenking the pit-chersduring suoli process, and the work can bo speedily and neatly done, and by fastening on the coverl of the pitcher with rivets, ns described, a permunerit attachment is readily eiiectcd.
Having described our invention, what wc claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent,"is-
1. As u new article of manufacture, n pitcher,'A B, Iproduced by blowing the glass or other4 suitable material in a mould, and providing it with a-metu1lic`cov@r, substantially vas described. y
2. The' method herein described of pcrforating glass pitchers andsecuring' the covers `upon them, substan. tially as dcscribed. l l
Witness our hands in matter of our application for a patent for improvement in manufacture of glass-ware.
