By Vthus eouibining one pivoted and one sliding pawl with the-ratchet-hend, I am enabled to place the instrument in a. most Y con'ipoet and eifeetive form. Two sliding pnwls could not well be-mode effective in this form, for the reason that ,they would be too for fre'm th'efcentre, and their` hold would be too angular on the teeth. Two pivoted pswls would meetwith the sume objection, und the additional one that they would require -`toe much space, and-would widen the instrument, 'The sliding and pivotedpawls, as described, obviete-th'ose Iobjections by'producing' the most eeetive hold on the teeth ond restingin n. no rrovv compass.l This arrangement of the pn'ls adapts the instrument to many uses where ordin'nry pnwl's connotbe employed. The employment oi' two or more pawls, as described, with an uneq'iml number of teeth, the seid pouls engaging alternately, avoids the necessity of many ne teeth, which Aallovrzhut a slight hold, undwhieh soon weer out. -By the m'eans described, I. am enabled to employ'eompsratively large teeth, and still furnish as many engagements by theplurality of parvis.
