Be it known that I, J oHN DoHsE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Queens, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sample-Sheets, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to an improvement in sample-sheets, and has more particularly for its object to provide a sample-sheet which is divided into separable color-display sections arranged in vertical and transverse columns, each section bearing an index-key denoting its position both in the vertical and horizontal columns and also bearing the reference-keys of one or more of the other sections.

The object of my invention is to provide a sample-sheet arranged so that when the color on any one of the display-sections is used as a body-color by reference to the said section the colors which may be used as trimmers for the body-color may be selected without trouble.

A further object is to provide a sample-sheet of the above character in which all oi' the sections are separable, so that the section bearing a color which is to be used as a body-color may be separately compared with each of the sections bearing a color which may be used as a trimmer for the body-color.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a face view of a portion of a sample sheet, a sufficient number of colordisplay sections being illustrated to give a clear understanding of my invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse or back view of the same, and Fig. 3 shows two of the color-display sections separated from the sample-sheet.

The sample-sheet shown herein is divided into separable sections by vertical lines of perforations and transverse lines of perforations. The vertical columns thus formed are represented by A B C, and the transverse columns are denoted by l 2. The face of each section is fitted to display a color-such, for instance, as the color of a paint or the color of goods,

as may be desired. In the present instance Serial No. 178,474. (No model.)

I have shown the six sections as displaying the colors white, yellow, orange, red, black, and green for illustrating my invention. Each section is provided with a reference-K55 which" indicates its position both in the horizontal column and the vertical column by placing on the section the reference-numeral corresponding to the horizontal column and the referenceletter corresponding to the vertical column. This reference-key is preferably placed on the face of the section adjacent to the color displayed thereon. Each section is further provided with the reference-keys oi' one or more of the other sections which display colors harmonizing with the color on this particular section. For instance, on the section A', displaying the color white, the reference-keys Bf viz., the section displaying the color yellow- O, the section displaying orange, and O2, the section displaying green, are placed. These reference-keys are shown placed on the back 7 of the section; but it isto be understood that they may be placed on the face of the section,

it' so desired, the reason for placing them on the back of the section being for the purpose of preventing confusion with the reference- 7 key carried by the section upon which they are placed.

By making the sections separable it is readily seen that the sections bearing any two colors which harmonize may be detached from the sheet and Vplaced together for comparison without being confused with the colors displayed with the other sections. Y

It is to be understood that the sample-Sheet may be provided with any number of sections and that the sections may display many shades of color. It is to be further understood that the sample-sheet may be used for displaying material, as well as the colors of paints, with equally good results. In fact, the samplesheet is applicable wherever it is desired to bring sections bearing two different colors to-` gether separate from the other colors on the sample-sheet.

without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the form of the sheet shown herein; but

What I claim is- 1. A sample-sheet divided into color-display sections, each section bearing its own reference-key and the reference-keys of one or more other sections.

2. A sample-sheet divided into separable color-display sections, each section bearing its own reference-key and the reference-keys of one or more other sections.

3. A sample-sheet divided into color-display sections arranged in vertical and transverse columns, each section having a key denoting its position in the vertical column and a key denoting its position in a horizontal column.

4. A sample-sheet divided into color-display sections arranged in vertical and transverse columns, each section having a key denoting its position in the vertical column, a key denoting its position in a horizontal column and rations, each section bearing its own referencekey and the. reference-keys of one or more other sections.
