PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINATION GARMENT-SUSPENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 750,325, dated January 26, 1904.
Application filed December 23, 1902. Serial No. 136,348. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BUZBY TYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Combination Garment-Suspender, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combination garment-suspender.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of garment-supporting devices and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one designed for the reception of garments of both men and women and adapted to suspend a considerable number of the same, whereby a comparatively large number of garments may be properly cared for within a very small space.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment-Suspender of this character adapted to be supported by a rod, nail, hook, or similar fastening device and to enable the means for engagingsuch pole or fastening device to support the collar of a coat inproper position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that,
changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction within the scope ofthe claims may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment-suspending device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
. 1 designates an oppositely-tapered bar formng the body portion of the garment-suspend- Ing device and having a curved upper edge to conform to the configuration of a coat or similar garment, and extending from the ends of the bar 1 are coat-supporting loops 2, located at the upper edge of the bar and substantially following the curvature of the same to form continuations thereof. The ooat-supporting loops, which are preferably constructed of a single piece of stout wire or similar material, are formed by coiling the wire to strengthen the outer portion of the loops and to provide the side portions thereof, and the terminals 3 of the wire are bent. inward to form the inner transverse end portions of the coat-supporting loops and are provided with eyes for embracing the adjacent side of the loop.
The intermediate portion of the wire or other material of which the coat-supporting loops are constructed is extended longitudinally of the bar or body portion of the garment-suspending device and is secured to the rear face of the same by means of staples, which receive the intermediate portion 5 of the wire near the ends of the bar or body portion. The intermediate connecting portion of the wire is centrally extended to form a combined collar-supporting device and means for engaging a rod, hook, nail,or other fastening device. The wire is angularly bent to form two sides 6 and is secured by staples 7 or other suitable fastening devices arranged at the lower ends of the shanks of the hook-shaped sides 6. These hook shaped sides form an upwardly-extending double hook and are connected at their outer depending portions or bills 8 by an inverted-U-shaped portion 9.
The U-shaped connecting piece or portion 9' Y is located at the inner sides or faces of the bills of the double hook and reinforce the same, which are connected at their upper ends by the top of the U-shaped connecting piece or portion, which prevents any separation of the sides of the double hook and which is arranged to engage a nail, hook, or similar fastening device for suspending the garmentsupporting device. The double hook is also adapted to engage a horizontal pole or rod, which will extend longitudinally of the bar or ing knob or enlargement.
body portion and whichwill not interfere with the hanging of garments on the garment-suspending device. The double hook, which extends upward from the center of the bar or body portion, is arranged to support the collar of a coat for holding the same in proper position.
The bar or body portion 1 is provided at its opposite faces with garment-receiving hooks 10 and 11. The front hooks are arranged at the center and opposite side of the garmentsupporting device, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the rear hooks are located at opposite sides of the center of the rear face of the bar or body, as shown in Fig. 2; but the hooks may be arranged in any other desired manner, as will be readily understood. Each hook consists of a curved portion 12, centrally connected with an attachment-plate 13 and supported by a horizontal connecting portion 14:, forming a brace and extending from the upper end of the curved portion to the attachment-plate. The curved portion 12, which is disposed in a vertical plane, curves downward and outward from the attachmentplate and terminates in an upwardly-extend- These hooks are adapted to receive skirts and other garments, and the bar or body portion 1 is also provided at its upper. edge with knobs 15, arranged at opposite sides of the center and adapted to receive and support shirts and other light garments. The knobs, which may be of any desired construction, are preferably provided with threaded shanks, which are screwed into the bar or body portion 1, the latter being preferably constructed of wood.
The garment-suspending device is adapted for the reception of garments of both men and women, and it is capable of receiving and properly arranging a comparatively large number of garments and of enabling the same to be arranged within a comparatively small space. The centrally-arranged upwardly-extending double hook is not only adapted to permit the suspending device to be hung in a variety of ways, but it is also arranged to form a support for the collar of a coat or analogous garment for holding the same in proper position. Also the garment-supporting hooks by being arranged at the front and rear faces of the bar or body portion are adapted when subjected to the weight of garments to prevent the same from twisting or canting the device.
What is claimed is- 1. A garment-suspending device provided with means for holding garments, and having an upwardly-extending transversely-disposed hook composed of two sides spaced apart and provided at the outer ends thereof with a connecting portion arranged to engage a fastenhooks and arranged to engage a fastening device, substantially as described.
3. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar or body portion, coat-supporting loops, and a collar-supporting device formed integral with the loops, and consisting of a centrally-arranged upwardly-extending transversely-disposed double hook'composed of two sides spaced apart, and an inverted-U-shaped portion connecting'the sides of the double hook at the bills thereof, substantially as described.
4. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar forming a body portion and presenting flat vertical front and rear faces,m'eans for suspending it from a support, and garment receiving means projecting from each of the faces of the bar or body portion, substantially as described.
5. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar forming a body portion presenting flat vertical front and rear faces, means arranged at the top thereof for suspending it from a support, and hooks extending from each of the faces of the bar or body portion and arranged to receive garments, substantially as described.
6. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar forming a body portion presenting flat vertical front and rear faces, knobs projecting from the bar at the upper edges thereof, and a suspending device located between the knobs and arranged to support a collar, substantially as described.
7. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar forming a body portion presenting flat vertical front and rear faces, a central collar-supporting device consisting of a hook for suspending the bar or body portion from a support, garment-receiving hooks projecting from each of the faces ofthe bar or body portion, and knobs arranged at the upper edge of the bar or body portion, substantially as described.
8. A garment-suspending device comprising a bar or body portion, coat-supporting loops extending from the ends of the bar or body portion, a central collar-supporting device consisting of a transversely disposed double hook composed of two sides spaced apart, and an inverted-U-shaped portion connecting the sides of the double hook at the bills thereof and arranged to engage a fasten- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing device, knobs arranged at the upper edge my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in of the bar or body portion and located at opthe presence of two Witnesses.
posite sides of the collar-supporting device, WILLIAM BUZBY TYLER. 5 and garment-receiving hooks extending from Witnesses:
the opposite faces of the bar or body portion, WILLIAM H. PosT,
substantially as described. CHARLES G. KAY.
