TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN Beit known that I, SAMUEL LEWS, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new Improved Snow-Clearer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,l and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being ings forming part of this specification. u
This invention relates to a new and improved device to be used for the removal oi snow and cut ice from the surface of icedakes and skating-ponds.
The invention consists in a peculiar construction o? the machine, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the snow or cut ice, as the machine is drawn along, is scraped up, and by a very simple manipulation on the part of the driver deposited in piles on the banks or sides of the lake or pond.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the machine, in the linea: x, g. 2.
Figure 2 is a top view, looking down upon thc receiving-board 4, and showing the manner had to the accompanying drawot` connecting -the receiver 6 with the frame' or front part 1; also showing the upper portion of the latter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The general construction and operation of this implement are as follows zA A strong nf any. suitable wood, the top and sides secured firmly, as shown in tig. 16, To this frame are attached a. seat, 3, w'indlass and gearing 17,'lever frame is attached the receiver or box 6 G, bythe pivots or bolts 11. plane, as seen in g. 1, is furnished at its lower edge with a metallic knife or scraper, 5; ,is furnished with the Aeye-bolt 9, near its upper edge, while still further up the brace is hinged to it, as shown at 10. The brace 8 is slotted through, as shown atiigs. 1 and 2, in order to allow the passage and play of the chain 7 during the frame,1, 1 and is mada 2,1vith the additional braces seen at The 'receiving-board 4 forms an inclined voperation of the machine. The chain 7 is attached to the' eye-bolt 9, at one end, and to the windlass at the other, while the brace 8 is notched out at -its front end, so as to as seen in iig. 1'.
The operation is as follows: The horse being hitched, and the driver seated, the machine is driven into the snow, the knife 5 setting close down to the surface. As the apparatus advances, the snow or cut ice which has collected at the foot of the'inclined plane or receiving-board 4, is forced out by that which it is still meeting, I of the pond, arriving at which he presses with his foot upon the lever 13, iig. 2, which throws up thefront end of the brace 8, at the same time making the requisite number of turns of the windlass to bring the loaded part oi' the machine into the position indicated by the red lines in iig. 1, when the load will be discharged. The driver then removes his foot from the lever, and his hand from the windlass, and the receiver 6 and brace 8 regain their original position, while the machine, without changing its speed, heads for another' load. It will be seen that the brace 8 prevents the tilting of the receiver till its front end is lifted, and that the slot near its rear end allows free play for the chain 7 while the load is being discharged, the spring l-l preventing tue action of the lever on the brace till the foot of the driver produces the elevation of the latter, as described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent- The combination of the tilting rear box 6, frame 1, 2, brace 8, windlass 17, and lever 13, all arranged and operating substantially as described for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 18th day of January1868.
SAMUEL LEWIS.
