Description
A-UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. DUDLEY, OF MILTON, CONNECTICUT.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,021, dated June 6, 1854.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. DUDLEY, of Milton, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut,`have invented a new and useful Improvement in RoadScrapers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented, which drawings constitute a part of said description. Y
My improvement consists in constructing the scraper in such manner and form as to enable the operator to continue the work `taking the earth from the sides of the road and delivering it in the middle without the trouble andV delay of upsetting or of lifting the scraper in order to discharge the load. By this means I am enabled to proceed along the side of the road raising the earth along the edge of the scraper and delivering it constantly at the end in the middle of the road. vI also construct the lconnect-ing hooks and chains in such manner as to allow the scraper to be turned over if required without falling on thechains.
See the drawing Figure 1 is an oblique view of the scraper in operation (A,) is the main plank or board `of the scraper (0,) is the chain so arranged as to draw the board diagonally forward and `may be adjusted to any desired angle. (II,) is the handle. (13,) is the bow or hook by which the chain is attached to the back of the board. It may be seen at Fig. 2 which shows the elevation; the height of the bow allows the scraper to be thrown over without .interfering with the chains; but having them attached on the back side is more important on account of delivering the earth at the end, as it leaves they front side clear of any obstruct-ion.
In using the common scraper in the old way half of the time and labor are spent in backing or turning about in order to load and `unload all of which is obviated by my manner of constructing and using; for by drawing the scraper obliquely the earth is constantly raised from the side and delivered at the end of the scraper in the middle of the road.
I do not claim the invention of Scrapers, hains, hooks, or either of them as such,
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the bow or bows (B,) with the scraper for the purpose set forth, and in a manner substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name in presence of two witnesses.
sAMUiiLv DUDLEY.
