PATENT OFFICE.
FRED HAUFF, OF AKRON, OHIO.
HAME-TUG.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent N0. 749,733, dated January 19, 1904. Applic i n fi- February 6, 1903- Serial No. 142,207. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED HAUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harhe-Tugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-tugs; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to effect improvements whereby the tug is adapted to be readily detached from the hame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a hame-tug embodying my improvements, showing a portion of the front end of the outer ply of the housing removed to disclose the pivotal connection between the pivoted member of the draft-bar eye and the draft-bar. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation showing the pivoted member of the tug-eye open.
In the embodimentof my invention I provide a draft-bar 1, which is preferably made of steel or iron and is formed at its front end with a curved hooked portion 2, which forms one member of the tug-eye. To the said draft-bar is pivoted a similar-shaped oppositely-disposed member 3, adapted to coact with the member 2 to form a closed tug-eye and to be opened therefrom to permit the disengagement of the draft-bar from the portion a of the hame Z). The pivot 4 is here shown as a rivet. I do not limit myself in this particular.
The draft-bar is incased in the leather portion A of the hame-tug, said leather portion being here shown as comprising the guard 6, the buckle-strap 7 doubled to receive the trace-buckle 8 and forming two plies 9 10 stitched together and also stitched to the guard. The loop 11 for the front end of the trace is secured between the inner ply of the buckle-strap and the guard. That side of the guard which is next to the inner ply of the trace-buckle strap is provided with a longitudinal groove 12, in which the draft-bar 1 is inserted, and the inner ply of the trace-buckle strap is provided at its outer end with a recess 13 of sufficient size and width to receive and cover the inner pivoted end of the pivoted member 3 of the tug-eye, so that the inner end of said pivoted member and the pivot, together with the. straight portion of the draft-bar, are housed and completely concealed. The width of the recess in the inner ply of the trace-buckle strap is such as to enable the pivoted member 3 to be opened from the integral member 2 of the tug-eye to adapt the draft-bar to be disconnected from the hame. Within the scope of my invention any suitable means may be employed to secure the draft-bar in the casing or housing. I here show a rivet 14 for this purpose.
It will be understood that by this construction of the draft bar with the integral and pivoted tug-eye members the tug-eye may be opened to detach the tug from the hame without the necessity of first removing the draftbar from the tug.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having'thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hame-tug, the combination of a draft-bar having a tug-eye member formed integral at one end thereof, a tug-eye member pivoted to the draft-tug for lateral movement and coacting with the integral tug-eye member, and a housing inclosing the draft-bar and the inner pivoted portion of the pivoted tug-eye'member, whereby the pivot of the latter is concealed, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a draft-bar, having an integral tug-eye member, and a pivoted laterally-movable tug-eye member at one end, a guard having a longitudinal recess to receive the draft-bar, and a trace-buckle strap secured on the guard, having an inner ply and an outer ply, the former having a recess at its outer end to receive the pivoted endof the pivoted tug-eye member, whereby the said pivoted end of the pivoted tug-eye member is concealed, substantially as described.
a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
. FRED HAUFF. Witnesses:
JOHN NovA'rNY, J. J. WARNER.
