'Lett'ers Patent No. 74,964, Jateol February 25,1868.-
IMPROVEMENT IN PREPARING SGHOOL-S LATES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, LAwRENcE WIEGEL, Jossrn LEHNBEUTER, and CHARLES FEGERS, all of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, and State o f'Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful School-Slate, and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
The body portion of the slate proper is composed as follows: Take equal parts liquid caowtchouc and esphaltum, and add thereto about double their joint weight of pulverized pumice-stone, and'mix the whole with enough turpentine to format thin paste, and apply the same to thick pasteboard by means of rollers, the same as in printing, and while the board is yet soft indent itssurface with written or other characters, as hereinafter explained. The frame may be in four pieces, tong'ucd together as shown, or of any other customany or desired form. V v V i In order toassist infantile scholars, we lit'NlGntfO'itO or both sides of the slate with letters numerals, or other characters in intagliot (See, for exauiple's,,L'Mj N O and 1 2 3 4 56 7,8 9 0 in the accompanying illustration.) The learner having amused himself by tracing the characters with the point of his pencil, acquires thereby almost imperceptibly and without labor a facility in tracing the same lines on the bare slate. C is a'rasp, of steel or iron, fastened to the frame, and serving its a pencil-sharpener. D is a pencil-holder formed by two elastic lips of steel or brass. V
We are aware that some of the materials used by us have before been employed 'in the manufacture of Mental slates; but
What'we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An artificial slate, made with a composition of liquid caoutchouo, asphaltuzn, and pulverized pumice-stone redueed'to a thin paste with spirits oft'urpentine, and applied to pastebcard bytneans of rollers, all substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimonyj of which invention, we hereuntoset our hands.
