f" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i ALBERT C. L. CHAPMAN, OF EASTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO AMOS SHEPARD COOLEY, OF EASTHAMPTON, MASSA- CHUSETTS.
PEN-WIPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,474, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed September 24, 1903.` `Serial No, 174,464. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
` ments in Pen-Wipers, of which the following is a full, clear, and'exact description.
This invention relates to a combined penwiper and advertising novelty, the object being to provide a simple and improved construction and combination of parts for constituting an eflcient pen-wiper and at the same time render the same available in an attractlve and useful manner to carry an advertlsement or advertisements; and the device i consists in parts formed and combined all suban inverted position.
` stantially as hereinafter fully described, and
set forth in the claims.
The improved pen-wiper and advertising novelty is fully and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same as seen at the front. Fig. 2 is a sectional and perspective representation of the device as in Fig. 3 is a perspective representation of the securing device, a portion of which may bear advertising matter or any pictorial representation.
In the drawings, a a, 6 b, and c c represent layers or thicknesses of felt or other suitable material adapted efficiently to be employed for pen-wiping purposes, the same being, as here shown, though not necessarily, arranged in pairs, which pairs are successively of increasing size, superimposed concentrically one upon the other, and united by the fastening device represented in Fig. 3 and also in Fig. 2, such fastening device consisting of a hollow head B, comprising outer cup-shaped shell j', having the edge portions g thereof in-V wardly turned toprovide a iiange, which is f crimped over and secured to the marginal porhead of the fastening device, and said device,
moreover, comprises the prongs c' vl, united to p the head j, which head is located within the chamber contained within said button-like part, the prongs projecting through a narrow aperture 7c therefor in the back plate la, and said prongs centrally penetrate all of the layers a, and c of the felt and are extended through a thin rearwardly-disposed retainingplate m, having the slit or aperture a therein, and the extremities of the prongs are angularly overturned, as indicated at o o, on the other side of the retaining-plate, securely holding the button-like head and all of the superimposed pen-wiping layers of felt together. The plate m might be omitted and the prongs outturned against the bottom felt layer.
The intermediate portion of the rearmost or bottom layer c of the felt has secured thereto by paste, glue, or other adhesive a Asheet which may be round, rectangular, or any fancied shape, the object of the same being to conceal the rear fastening, imparting a finished aspect to the device, and to bear printing or other matter for advertising, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The button-like head may, as indicated in Fig. 1, have a portrait thereon, photographic, printed, or engraved, and it may be surrounded by an ornamental border in one or several colors and bear printing matter thereon, and by making the different layers of the felt of different colors of such material a very attractive as well as useful novelty is produced, which may, as hereinabove explained, be of value as an advertising medium, and the same may also be employed as a campaign novelty. Advertising matter may be placed on the tops of the layers a, or c of the pen-wiping material, as well as on the thin back stuck-on section or on the top button.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A pen-wiper device consisting of superimposed layers of felt or like material, and a fastening device therefor comprising a relatively large button-like head having prongs penetrating said layers, and a retaining-plate at the back of the layers through which the prongs protrude and against the outer face of which their extremitiesare angularly turned, substantially as described.
2. A pen-Wiper device consisting 01". super-v imposed layers of felt or like material, and astening means therefor comprising a relatively large button-like head having prongs penetrating said layers, and a retaining-plate at the back of the layers through which the prongs protrude and against the outer face of Which their extremities are angularly turned, and a layer 4of sheet material stuck to the rear side of the bottom layer of felt covering the rear portion of the fastening and adapted to carry advertising matter thereon, as described; 3. A pen-Wiper consisting of superimposed and concentric layers of felt of dierent sizes, a relatively large button-like head comprising cup-shaped part f having rearWard-inturned flange g and back plate It, marginally engaged by said flange and provided With theaperture f, a pair of prongs z' e', having the uniting portion j located Within the button-like head and the prongs projecting through said aperture 7c, centrally through the superimposed layers, the back-retaining plate m through Which the extremities of the prongs protrude and against the' outer face of which such extremities are angularly turned and the rearwardly-disposed sheet stuck to rear one of said layers and covering the retaining-plate and said prong eX- tremities.
4. An article of manufacture, comprising a series of superposed layers of felt or like Inaterial, constituting a pen-Wiper, and a fastening device therefor consisting of a relatively large button -like head, having penetrating prongs Which pass through the said superposed layers and have their extremities turned outwardly to securely hold the layers in place.
