PATENT OFFICE.
SHUTTLE-TH READER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,954, dated January 5, 1904. Application led September 25, 1902. Serial No. 124,772. Clo model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, OSCAR RAOUL JACQUES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Shuttle-Threaders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for threading shuttles of any kind, but more particularly adapted for use in connection with loom or Weaving shuttles.
The object that I have in view is the provision of a sanitary device simple in construction and efcient in operation adapted to pneumatically draw a thread of any kind through the eye of a shuttle. My device includes means for mechanically creating a suction by atmospheric-air pressure in a direction to draw a thread through the shuttle-eye, and this mechanical operation saves the operator the objectionable practice of placing an unclean shuttle to the lips, so as to create a suction by inhalation for threading the shuttle, and also overcomes the inhalation of small particles or pieces of colored or dyed yarns and threads, the latter being detrimental to health because of the poisonous nature of some of the materials.
The pneumatic threader of my invention is of such simple construction that it can be easily kept in repair at a triing cost, and the device can be operated with facility for quickly threading the shuttle.
'With these ends in vienT the invention consists in the combination and construction of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and the novel features will be pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a shuttle-threader embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken longitudinally through the suctionpump. Fig. 4. is an inverted plan view of the threader shown in Fig. 1.
The suction-pump which forms one oli the elements of my improved shuttle-threader contemplates the employment of a cylinder 10, one end of which is closed by a head 11. At the other end of the pump the cylinder is provided with a removable head l2, which is adapted to be screwed detachably thereto, said removable cylinder-head 12 having a plurality of ports 13, which allow the free ingress of air to the cylinder and the rapid escape of air from said cylinder when the piston-head is moved in oneY direction. The rod 14. of the piston passes centrally through the perforated cylinder-head 12,and the outer end of said rod is provided with a suitable handle 15. The piston-head of the pump consists of the dished metallic plates 17 18 and an interposed packing 19, of rubber, leather, or other suitable material. The members of said piston-head are fitted on an inner threaded portion of the piston-rod 14, and said members are clamped solidly together by the nuts 20, the latter being screwed on said threaded part of the piston-rod and engaging with the respective metallic piston members 17 18, as shown by Fig. 3. The packing 19 is held firmly between the piston members, and its peripheral edge is exposed beyond said piston membersfor frictional engagement with the inner surface of the pum pcylinder 10.
21 designates a suction-tube, which is attached to the head 11 of the pump-cylinder, said tube being in communication with the chamber of the cylinder and extending a suitable distance beyond the implement in order that the shuttle of any suitable kind may be brought into cooperative relation to said implement.
In the construction shown by the drawings I have provided means by which a quick movement is given to the pump-piston by the simple operation of releasing a catch. A guide-tube 23 is fastened centrally to the cylinder-head 12, and in this tube is slidably arranged the piston-rod 14, the handle-bar 15 of which passes through longitudinal slots 24, formed in opposite sides of the guide-tube 23. Around the piston-rod and Within the tube 23 is arranged a spiral spring25, which serves to normally press the rod 14; outwardly. A locking-lever 27 is fulcrumed at 28 on the guide-tube 23, and the long arm of this lever is provided with a knob 29, while the short ICO lever-arm is forked or bifurcated at 30, the branches of said bifurcation lying in the path of the handle-bar l5 on the piston-rod. A spring 31 acts against the lever to normally throw the short forked arm thereof into the path ofthe handle and to maintain the lever in position to automatically engage therewith.
The handle l5 is pressed inwardly to move the piston-rod and the piston-head in a like direction, thus placing the spring under tension. The parts are heldin the described position by the engagement of the bifurcated end of the lever with the handle-bar 15,
said lever snappinginto engagement with thel handle-bar.y To use the implement, it is only necessary for the operator to press on the knob 29 and overcome the resistance of the spring 3l, and the spring 25 thereupon forces the rod and piston quickly in an outward direction, whereby the piston creates a strong atmospheric suction to draw the thread through the shuttle-eye.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A portable hand implement for threading shuttles comprising a cylinder having a suction-inlet, a piston having an extended rod, a spring acting to impel the piston in one direction, a handle for operating the piston, and an automatic catch for locking the piston in a compressed state of the spring, said catch having a normally exposed operating part.
2. A portable hand implement for threading shuttles, comprising a cylinder having a suction-inlet, a tubular guide, a piston having a rod, a handle for operating the piston, a spring housed in said tubular guide and tending lto normally move the piston in one direction, and a pivoted catch having means for locking the piston in acompressed condition of the spring, said catch having an exposed nger-piece.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OSCAR RAOUL JACQUES.
