ALFRED JOHANSON, OF SARALAND, ALABAMA.
SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,505, dated December 29, 1903. Application led April 25, `1908. VSerial No. 154,351. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED JoHANsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, (but having declared my intention of becom,u ing a citizen of the United States of America,) residing at Saraland, in the ,county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful i-rnprovements in sash-locks; and its object is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be readily secured within a window-frame and having means whereby the sashes can be quickly and securely locked in any desired position within the frame.
The invention consists in providing a plate Within each end of which is hinged a clamping-arm having a serrated or toothed working face. These arms are engaged by the threaded ends of a stem which projects through the casing and is adapted to be revolved by means of a thu mb-nut or other suitabledevice. The ends of the stem are provided with right and left hand threads, respectively, whereby when said stem is turned both clamping members or arms will be simultaneously moved toward or from each other.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction, combination, and arrangement ofthe several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described'and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section through a window frame and sash and showing my improved sash-lock in position, and Fig. 2 is a detail View of one end of the lock.
Referring to the figures by numerals of ref erence, l is a windowframe within which sashes 2 are mounted in the ordinary manner. A plate 3 is fastened within the frame by means of screws or in any other suitable manner and is provided at each end with a pair of inwardly-extending ears 4, between which is hinged one end of a curved clamping-arm 5. The working face 6 of this arm has teeth or serrations thereon, and a screw-threaded aperture '7 extends through the arm at a point adjacent to the pivot thereof. The inner or pivot end 8 of the arm 5 is slotted, as shown at 9, so as to permit said end to have a slight movement upon the pivot-pin 10.
A stem ll extends across the outer face of plate l and is providedadjacent to its ends with right and left hand threads 12 and 13, respectively, which project through and engage the threaded apertures 7. An extension 14 projects from one of these threadedends and through the side of frame 1 and is provided with a thumb-nut 15 or with other suitable means whereby the stem ll may be readily turned.
When it is desired to fasten the two sashes against movement within the frame, the stem l1 is sopturned as to draw the clamping-arms 5 into contactwith the outer faces of said sashes and the serrated or toothed working faces 6 thereof will be forced into engagement with said sashes and will hold them against movement. The arms can be quickly disengaged from the sashes by turning the stem 1l in the opposite direction. The arms 5 are covered by cleats 16, which are ordinarily ar` ranged at the sides of the window-frame, the inner surfaces of said cleats being cut out to 4receive the arms, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a sash-lock, the combination with a plate, of a stem having its ends screw-threaded in opposite directions, inwardly-extending arms pivoted to the ends of the plate and engaged by the threaded portions thereof, and means for revolving the stem.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature" in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED JOHANSON.
