RALPH-B. WILSON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR TEMPORARY BINDERS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,129, dated December 29, 1903.
Application filed January 17, 1903. Serial lie-139.422- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may-concern.-
Be it known that I, RALPH B. WILSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illiters of reference marked thereon, which form v a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to letter or paper files for the purpose of holding the leaves or papers together when locked against the upright posts upon which the papers are held; and it consists in the provision of a rotatable disk with suitable handle thereon, having a radial recess or slot therein which is adapted to cooperate with a similarly-shaped slot in the casing in which the disk is mounted and so arranged that there will be a cam action between the marginal walls of the two slots, causing the posts to be gripped and held securely thereto.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction of the device and in combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
M-y invention is illustrated in the accompan ying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section througha temporary binder or paper-file, showing a sectional View ofmy device as applied to the post of the binder. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the temporary binder, showing the device as applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the invention, showing the disk as held in a locked or closed relation with ref erence to the casing in which it is mounted. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the slotted disk.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate the top and bottom pieces of the temporary binder, which have hinged connection at B and B with the pieces 0 and O, and rising from the piece 0 are the posts D D, which are anchored to said piece 0 and upon which the papers E are mounted. Secured to the piece 0 is a disk-casing F, having wings F, which are held to said piece 0 by means of screws H, and said casing F has a radial slot K formed therein and a semicircular slot L therein. A disk N, a detail View of which is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, has aradial slot N therein, having a slight cam-surface N adjacent to the inner end of said slot and is provided with a handle M, which is adapted to be passed through said semicircular slot L and be guided therein. When the two radial slots, one in the case and one in the disk, are brought into registration with each other and with the recesses C in the edge of the piece 0, the cover and piece 0', with the attachment, are in readiness to be applied to the wire by inserting the wires in said registering slots, after which the disk is given a partial rotary movement and the cam-surface of the disk N is brought to bear frictionally against the posts D, and the cover is held tightly against the papers beneath. When it is desired to remove the cover for any purpose, the disk, with the handle thereon, is rotated in a reverse directionto free the posts of the binding contact between the disk and the latter and the cover may be easily removed.
While I have shown a particular construction-embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A locking device forternporary binders, comprising in combination with the top and bottom of the binder, a post secured to said bottom, a slotted casing having oppositelydisposed wings secured to said top, aslotted disk mounted in the raised portion of the casing above the outer face of the top of said binder, an integral handle on said disk working in a semicircular slot in the casing, as set forth.
2. Aloeking device for temporary binders, angle and passing through and guided in the comprising in combination with the top and slot of the casing, as set forth. I I0 bottom of the binder, a post secured to said In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my bottom, a slotted easing having oppositelysignature in presence of two Witnesses.
5 disposed wings which are fastened to the top RALPH B. WILSON.
of the binder, a disk with radial slot seated Witnesses: in and substantially filling said casing, an JAMES D. LEARY,
integral handle on said disk disposed at an ROBERT W. STEWART.
