Description
No 747,812. I PATENT'ED DEG.'22, -1903. J. E. WALLACE.
TONGUE ATTACHMENT FOR BINDBRS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 12, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented December 22, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
TONGUE ATTACHMENT FOR BINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,812, dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed September 12, 1903. Serial No. 172,963. (No model.)
Binders, &c.,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tongue attachments for binders, mowers, and other heavy tongued ma-.
chines; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to prevent side draft and to distribute the weight of the machine, and thereby permit it to be more readily drawn from place to place.
Another object is to so construct the attachment as to support the neck weight of the machine.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my in Vention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevationof the tongue attachment. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of side plate for the attachment, and Fig. 5 is a section through a tongue employing these modified formsof side plates.
Referring to the figures by numerals ofreference, 1 is a short tongue-section, to 0pposite sides of which are secured longitudinally-extending plates 2, which extend beyond the outer end of the section 1 and are provided with upwardly-extending ears 3. To each of these plates is bolted or otherwise secured a substantially U shaped hanger 4, having a cup 5 at its lower end for the reception of antifriction-balls 6. These balls are mounted in a'cup 7, arranged at the upper end of arms 8, between which is journaled a wheel 9. The cups 5 and 7 are arranged at an angle to the lower surface of the tongue-section 1, so as to hold the wheel 9 normally inclined and prevent side draft. Arranged within the ears 3 is-a pivot-pin 10, on which is revolubly-mounted an ear 11,
which extends upward from a plate 12. v This plate is bolted or otherwise secured to a tongue-section 13, which forms the principal portion of the tongue, and the inner end of which is mounted between the two side plates 2. A hooked plate 14 is fastened upon the section 1 and is adapted to be engaged by a chain 15, which extends downward between the two tongue-sections 1 and 13 and is permanently fastened to the bottom of the section 13 by means of astaple 16 or any other suitable device. p
. In lieu of providing the side plates 2 side plates 17 of modified form may be used. I have shown oneof these plates in Fig. 4. The same are substantially similar in construction to the plates 2, with the exception that parallel tubular beads 18 are formed in their outer faces for the reception of bolts 19, whereby a substantially U-shaped hanger having laterally-extending ears may be fastoned. in position. I have shown this'mannor of connecting the hanger 2O inFig. 5.
It will be seen that by providing-a wheel or caster such as is herein described at a point intermediate the ends of the tongue the Weight of the machine is removed from the draft animals. short grain or grass, chain 15 is shortened so as to firmly bind upon the inner end of tongue-.
In the foregoing description I have'shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and'I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment of the character described comprising a tongue-section, parallel side plates extending therefrom, a second tongue-section pivoted between the side plates, a flexible connection between the tongue-sections for supporting said second section and preventing sagging of the point of connection between the sections, and a Wheel connected to and adapted to support the engaging ends of the sections.
2. An attachment of the character described comprising a tongue-section, parallel side plates secured thereto, a second tonguesection pivoted between the side plates, a hanger depending from the side plates, arms revolubly connected thereto, a wheel journaled between the arms, a hook upon the first-mentioned section, and a flexible connection between said hook and the second section, said connection extending between the two sections.
3. An attachment of the character described comprising a tongue-section, parallel side plates connected thereto, tubular beads upon said plates, a hanger below the side plates, means for securing the hanger to the beads, arms revolubly connected to the hanger,a wheel journaled therebetween, a second tongue-section pivoted between the side plates, a flexible strip connected to the lower surface thereof and projecting between the tongue-sections, and a hooked plate upon the first-mentioned section adapted to engage the strip.
In testimony whereof I afix' my signature in presence of two witnesses.
