PATENT OFFIcE.
OF ERIE, ILLINOIS.
HARVESTER ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,443, dated'April 14, 1891.
Application filed November 5, 1889. Renewed January 16, 1891. Serial No. 378,027- (No model.)
" zen of the United States, residing at Erie, in
the county of Thiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin harvester attachments; and it consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and ar- 7 rangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and afterward specifically pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
The object of my invention is to provide a device whereby the machine can be readily and easily turned at rightangles.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to the tongue of the machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing in dotted lines the position of the tongue when making a square turn. Fig. 3 is a section through the hinge of the horsedetacher.
Referring to the drawings by letters of reference, A is the tongue of a harvesting-machine,having secured on its end two plates (0 a, which extend beyond the same, and having pivoted loosely on the top a bell-crank b. This bell-crank has a perforation in the horizontal position, which receives the king-bolt b',and a cord or ropec is attached tothe vertical portion. The other end of this cord or rope is placed within easy reach of the driver, so in case of the horses becoming unmanageable the driver may pull the cord raising the king-bolt, which passes through the couplingblock out of engagement with the same, thus releasing the horses from the machine and preventing any serious damage being done to the same.
B is an axle having two wheels secured on its ends. To this axle is secured the tongue 0, to which the horses are attached. On this axle B are two braces D, which extend rearwardly and converge, forming bearings for the shaft 6 of the coupling-block E. Said coupling-block forms a bearing for the kingbolt 0, which enables the tongue A of the machine to rest in a universal joint, preventing all horse motion being conveyed to the machine and the horses from receiving any jolt from the machine.
F indicates guard-plates secured on the top and bottom of the axle and extending out at the bent portion a sufficient distance to prevent the tongue A from rubbing the wheel, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
G indicates a draft-equalizer of ordinary construction, pivoted at g to abrace H, said brace H being secured to the tongue 0, and
itself being braced by pieces I. The draftequalizcr is pivoted in a direct line with the tongue A, and the braces I tend to make the draftdirect with the tongue A without any tension or strain on the brace II.
I am aware that many minor changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without in the least departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a harvesting-machine, of the truck pivotally secured to the tongue thereof, rearwardly-extending braces secured to the truck, and ablock journaled in the braces, substantially as described.
2.-'l he combination, in a harvesting-machine tongue having projecting plates on its upper and lower face, of a truck having two rearwardly-extending braces, a block journaled in the braces, 'to which said plates are pivotally secured, and the guards F, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN K. BEEHLER. Witnesses:
SHERMAN D. COLLINS, GEORGE NEER.
