TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
`Be it known that we, ALFRED Snnnnoon and WILLIAM SnEnLocK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements 4in mechanism, which we have designated or named the Mechanical Donkey, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full description Vofthe same.
The nature of our invention consists, rst, in combining, with the series of cog-wheels for giving'locomo tion to the donkey, a cam-wheel and reacting springfor the purpose of throwing off or uuseating the rider on the back ofthe donkey at the end of each revolution of' the cam-wheel; second, in the combination of an independent and adjustable rider with the reacting spring, for the purpose of unseating him from the back of the donkey; third, in combining, with the feet of the donkey, shoes, having clawfteeth on them, for the purpose of engaging into the surface of the carpet or licor, to prevent any back slip of the feet.
But, to describe our invention more particularly, we will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference, wherever they occur, referring to like parts.
Figure 1 is a side view of the donkey and rider.
Figure 2 is adetached side view of the mechanism and legs of the donkey.
Figure 3 is a plan view`of the same.
Figure 4 is a detached side `view of the cam-wheel and reacting spring for unseating the rider.
Figure 5 is a detached view of the claw-toothed shoes.
Figure' is a cut sectional view of the cam-wheel `and spring, through the line x x, fig. 4.
Letter A represents the frame of the working parts of the apparatus, in which are arranged, on suitable arbors B and C, cog-wheels D and E, and a main-spring, F, for thc purpose of giving mot-ion tothe series of cog-l wheels. On the opposite ends of the arbor B are secured cranks, G, to the centre-pins of which are :attached connecting-rods, H, for the purpose of operating the fore and hind legsl and J of the donkey. For the purpose of making the fore and hind legs gather forward alternately, the cranks are set in opposite directions from eachother.` Therefore, when the forelegs are set on the floor, the hind legs will gather forward, and-the reverse will be the case when the hind legs are set on the floor. A'lso in the arbor B is a loose cog-wheel, K, which is rotated by a pinion-wheel, e2, on the arbor e. On the side or face oi' the wheel K is a band or rim of metal, L, having a' small open space, f2, between its ends. The object of this wheel and cam-like attachment to its face is to detain or hold down a spring, M, by means of a notched detent-plate, N, attached to the end thereof, and engaging into the band L. Bythis means, the spring is kept down till the open space fz in the band comes round to liberate it, when it immediately ieacts, and, by means of the pin l?, tumbles the rider Q from his seat on the back of the donkey It. To readjust the spring, it must be depressed, so as to cause the datent-plate N toenter the open space f2 in the band,'and held down until the main-spring F is wound up. It
may then be released by the hand, as the band will hold the spring M from reacting until the open space in thel band comes round.
It will be obvious that the precise arrangement of the spring, and cam for operating the same, may be modified in several ways. We therefore do not intend to restrict ourselves to the precise arrangement herein described, so long vas we accomplish the object of unscating the rider by means of a reacting spring. l
For the purpose of preventing the feet of thc donkey from slipping backwards on the floor, the 'feet are armed with metal plates, 'S having claw-teeth in Ytheir back edges. By this means the feet of the donkey can maintain a secure foot-hold on the Hoor, and thus kecp up a sort'of walking motion till the main-springhas exhausted its power.
Having now described our invention, we will proceed to set forth what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States.
1. We claim the combination of the-cam-wheel K, made as described, 'wjth the spring M, having a notched datent-plate, N, attached thereto, for the purposes hereinbefore described. l
2. We also claim, in combination with the reacting spring M and awalking donkey, the independent or adjustable rider Q, for the purposes hcreinbefore set forth. V
3. -We also claim, in combination with the feet of awalking donkey, the claw-teethed shocs S, or equivalent devices therefor, for the purposes hercinbefore set forth.
