NITED STATES MANUEL JOSEPH SIQUEIRA, OF BROOKLYN, CALIFORNIA.
BRAKE BLocK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 277,360, dated May 8, 1883.
Application filed March 20, 1883. (N0 model.)
T 0 all whom i t may concern Be it known that I, MANUEL JOSEPH SI- QUEIRA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Brake-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of brakeblocks used in connection with wagon-wheels, to act by friction on tbetire of the wheel and to serve as a wearing-piece interposedbetween the brake-lever and the wheel. To this end it consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a brake-block, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the side of the brake-block next the wagon. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the outside, and Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
A represents the ,body of the brake-block, consisting of a piecdof wood bored through at a, to receive the end ofthe brake-lever and to rock thereon. This block is provided with a hook, B, pointed to one side, on which hook one end of one or more strips of leather, 1), is secured. The leather is drawn lengthwise over the block A, and at its other end is secured by means of a hinged pin, 0, like an in verted bosom-pin, passing through a hole in the leather and fastened down by its own hook, as shown. The body-piece of the pin 0 is firmly secured to the block. D is another similar pin secured to the inner side of the block by a hinge, d, and serving'as a lever by which to force the stretched leather into the cross-notch or hollow in the face of the block A. When pressed nearly down the pin or lever D is held at its outer end and closed into place by another lever, E, similarly hinged to the block at e, and in its turn held down by a hook, F.
The hollow in blockfA beneath pin O is for the treble purpose of keepin g the center of the shoe away from the wheel when not in use, of furnishing two bearings-one on each side of block, whereas it was formerly the practice to nail on the leathers one over another, so that the block frequently became filled with nails and split in pieces. purpose of taking the wear, and as they may be replaced when worn, there is no reason why my brake-block should not last as long asthe wagon.
\Nhat I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Theblock A, provided with the sidewisepointed hook B, and the pin 0, hinged to said block, in combination with the leather b, with holes in its ends, and adapted to receive the hook B and the pin 0, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the block A, hollowed in its face, the hook B, the pin 0, and the leather b, of the hinged lever or pin D, the hinged lever E, and the hook F, as and for the purpose specified.
MANUEL JOSEPH SIQUEIRA.
