SPl-llhlC -i-HNGE.
SEZEOIIIEIQA'EION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,276, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed October 1,1903. Serial Nov 175,310, (No model.)
To all 1077107 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY TSCHERNING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at I reeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in spring-hinges, relating particularly to an improved method of fastening the spring upon one of the leaves of the hinge.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of which- Figure l is a face view of the sprihghinge. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal view looking downward upon the plane 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section looking down upon the plane at a of Fig. l.
A is one of the leaves of the hinge, and B the other. These leaves are provided with knuckles a a b b, which are pivoted together by means of rivets O O. The leaf B has a tongue 11 provided with a perforation b and extending toward the leaf A. The leaf A is provided with 'a transverse socket upon the outer edge of the leaf and a longitudinal socket d upon the inner edge of the leaf. A spring I) is composed of a coil (Z, from the side of which opposite the pivot-line of the hinge extends upwardly an arm cl, the upper end of which is connected, by means of a link E, to the tongue the link being secured in the perforation b of said tongue. From the other side of the coil cl extends an arm 01 which passes through the socket a and is thereafter bent to extend outward across the leaf and into the socket C62.
the leaf and the socket a being preferably formed from a tongue upon the inner edge of the leaf by bending the same upward and around the arm of the spring. This method of fastening provides a secure means for holding the spring upon the leaf against any tendency to move therefrom caused by the operation of the hinge.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In aspring-hinge, the combination with the pivoted leaves, one of which has a tongue upon the inner edge near one end extending toward the other leaf and the other of which has a longitudinal socket along its inner edge near its middle portion and a transverse socket upon its outer edge near one end of the longitudinal socket, of a spring having a coil arranged near the end of one of the leaves, an arm extending longitudinally of the hinge from said coil through the inner socket, and. afterward transversely through the outer socket and an arm upon the other side extending longitudinally of the hinge toward the other end thereof and a link connecting the end of the latter arm with the tongue upon the other leaf.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, this th day of September, A. D. 1903.
HENRY TSOHERNING.
