SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,270, dated December 15, 1903.
Application led May 11,1903.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MORAS TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more particularly to that class of screw-clamps known as handscrews,7 and the invention has reference to certain improvements in the construction thereof whereby the clamp is more easily and quickly manipulated, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis aside elevation of myimproved screw-clamp. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line e e', Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represen-ts the fixed jaw. B represents the movable jaw. C represents the fulcrum-screw. D represents the clampingscrew, and E and F represent the actuating-nuts of the screws, respectively. The fulcrum-screw and the clamping-screw are both rigidly secured at one end to the Xed jaw A, as by means of cross-pins a, and both screws project at right angles thereto correspondingly to one side thereof only and carry the movable jaw B adjustably upon them in the following manner: The screws pass loosely through the movable jaw and carry upon theirl free ends, respectively, the sleeves b, each of which is divided into halves, each half being hinged in any suitable manmer at or near the base to a collar c. Each collar, as shown in the drawings, is formed with a central opening for the free passage of the screws and has an interior iiange d, which projects into the sleeve, and two exterior ears e, through which the screwsfpass to form a hinge connection for the respective halves of the sleeve. In a space provided between the interior flange (l and the sleeve l) springs g are mounted in such manner as to operate by their tension to open out the divided half of the sleeves. The sleeves h are interiorly screw-threaded for a distance Serial No. 156,526. (No model.)
near their outer ends to engage with the screws, and a locking-ring 72, is loosely carried upon each sleeve adapted to be slipped upon the threaded portion of thesleeve and adjusted to clamp the halves together .against the tension of the springs. The ends of the sleeves carrying the screw-threads are preferably slightly wedge-shaped and corrugated, and the inner faces of the locking-rings are correspondingly formed for the purpose of preventing accidental disengagement when the rings are drawn up to lock the halves together upon the screws.
The collar upon the clamping-screw differs in its construction from the collar on the fulcrum-screw in that its exterior flange d has an extension d', which projects loosely through an opening in the movable jaw and terminates in a [iange d2, which bears against the inner face of the movable jaw, while the collar on the fulcru m-screw bears directly against the outer face thereof, and if the jaws are made of wood suitable bearing-faces are provided ,for these collars-as, for instance, iron washers t', secured to or let into the wood.
In practice it will be seen that if the locking-rings h are released from the heads of the sleeves the springs open out the halves, and the movable jaw can thus be freely adjusted into any desired position upon the screws. After the adjustment is thus made the locking-rings are fastened again over the heads of the sleeves, and one sleeve after another can then be brought into operation, as in the usual manner of applying clamps of this character.
My construction saves time in operation. It is simple and easily operated, and the advantage of having both screws and the actuating means of the clamp both on the same side will be appreciated by those using this tool.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. In a hand-screw clamp, the combination with a fixed and a movable jaw, of fulcrum and clamping screws non-rotatably secured to the fixed jaw and passing freely through openings in the movable jaw, and rotatable members upon the free ends of said screws adapted to have a screw-threaded engagement therewith, the one on the fulcrum-screw ICO adapted to bear against the outer face of the movable jaw and the one on the clampingscrew adapted to bear against the inner face thereof.
2. In a hand-screw clamp, the combination with afixed and a movable jaw, of fulcrum and clamping screws non-rotatably secured tothe Xed jaw and passing freely through the movable jaw, and rotatable members upon the free ends of said screws adapted to have a screw-threaded engagement therewith, the one on the fulcrnm-screw adapted to bear against the outer face of the movable jaw and the one on the clampingscrew formed with a tubular extension freely passing through the opening in the jaw around the screw and having an enlargement at its free end adapted to bear against the inner face of the movable jaw.
3. In a hand-screw clamp, the combination With a fixed and a movable jaw, of fulcrum and clamping screws non-rotatably secured to the iixed jaw and passing freely through the movable jaw, and rotatable members upon the free ends ofsaid screw each composed of a sleeve having interior screw-threads at its outer end and longitudinally divided into sections, a collar to which said sections are hinged at the base, springs adapted to separate the sections at the screw-threaded ends and a locking-ring for the sections, the member upon the fulcrum-screw adapted to bear against the outer face of the movable jaw and the other member having its collar provided with a tubular rear extension freely projecting through the jaw and provided with a shoulder bearing against the inner face of the movable jaw.
4. In a hand-screw clamp, the combination with a fixed and a movable jaw, of fulcrum and clamping screws non-rotatably secured to the fixed jaw and passing freely through the movablejaw and rotatable members upon the screws each composed of a sleeve having interior screw-threads adapted to the screws and longitudinally divided into sections, a collar to which said sections are hinged at the base, springs adapted to separate, the sections and a locking-ring slidingly engaging the sleeve and adapted to lock the sections together, the collar of one of the members arranged to bear against the outer face of the movable jaw and the other in the reverse direction.
