FASTENEl-I FOR POSTERS, &.C.
srnorrroa'rroiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 74.7.253, dated December 15,1903.
7 Application filed December 18, 1902. Serial No. 135,748. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWALTON DUANE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a newand useful Fastener for Posters, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fasteners for posters, handbills, signs, and the like.
The object of the invention is in a cheap, ready, simple, thoroughly-feasible, and practical manner and without the employment of paste, wooden battens, or the like securely to fasten posters, handbills, and other advertising mediums in position against a bill-board or other suitable support and in such manner as positively to prevent separation of such mediums from their support, as by the action of wind or rain. V
In many localities, particularly in rural districts, it is the practice to secure posters or the like in position by the employment of wooden battens, strips of pasteboard, or metallic disks. Aside from the consideration of expense, which is an item that has to be carefully regarded in the bill-posting business, the employment of wooden or pasteboard battens is objectionable for the reason that a nonyielding edge is presented to the poster or the like which will operate to cut through it should itvibrate from the action of the wind. The employment of metallic disks is also objectionable for the reason that being spaced at wide intervals apart the intermediate portions of the poster are not stayed, so that spaces are left between it and the bill-board or other support into which the wind will enter and cause the poster to be torn from the support.
It is a further object of the present invention to obviate these objectionable features in a manner that will be at once practical, thoroughly effective, and inexpensive.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a fastener for posters or the like comprising a strip of flexible material having permanently reinforced attachingpoints.
The invention consists, further,in a fastener for posters or the like comprising a strip of flexible material and reinforcing devices permanently associated therewith at predetermined intervals.
The invention consists, further,in afastener for posters or the like comprising a strip of flexible material having reinforcing devices permanently associated therewith and inset from the edges of the strip.
The invention consists, further,in a fastener for posters or the like comprising a multi-ply flexible strip and reinforcing devices permanently included between the plies of the strip.
Theinvention consists, further,in a fastener for posters or the like comprising a multi-ply flexible strip and reinforcing devices perinanently included between the plies of the strip and inset from the edges thereof.
The inventionconsists, finally, in the novel construct-ion and combination of parts of a fastener for posters and the like, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there are illustrated four forms of embodiment of the invention each capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of as semblage without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one form of embodiment of the invention, wherein two plies of material are employed, between which the reinforcing devices are disposed, one corner of one of the plies being turnedback to exhibit one of the reinforces. Figs. 2 and 3 are views, respectiveiy in front and rear elevation, of another form of embodiment of the invention. Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views of another form of embodiment of the invention. Figs. 6 and 7 are similar views of still another form of the embodiment of the invention. view in front elevation of still another form of embodiment of the invention. Fig. 9 is a perspective view showing one manner in which the device is presented for use or for Fig. 10 is a perspective detail shipment.
Fig. 8 isa IOO is a similar view of the form of reinforce ems ployed in connection with the device shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Fig. 13' is a similar view of the form of reinforce employed in connection with the device shown in Fig. 1.
The device of. this invention comprises a flexible body portion 1 and a plurality of reinforces 2 suitably associated therewith and spaced at any desired distance apart. The body portion may consist of a strip of tough paper of any desired width and length or of any other flexible material other than wood or metal adapted to the purpose. The reinforces may be constructed of metal, such as tin, of wood tiber,.0f pasteboard, or of any other adaptable material. In the form of. embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. l the body portion consists of a multiply strip of paper or other suitable flexible material as may be composed of a single width folded upon itself and united by an adhesive, or of two strips secured together. The reinforces 2 are included between theplies of the fastener and are preferably of metal, and each is provided with an opening 3 to register with openings 4 in the body portion. It is to be understood that it is not essential that the body portion be provided with openings, but to facilitate using the device it is preferred to provide them. The reinforces are disposed along the length of the strip at any desired distance apart and are of less width than the body portion, thus to present flexible edges 43, that will yield to the movements of a poster when wind-shaken, thereby to obviate danger of cutting, which would inevitably result if the fastening device were rigid in character. While it is preferred to have the reinforces inset from the edges of the body portion, it is to be understood that, ifdesired, they may be coextensive in width therewith, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8, in which the edges of the body portion are yieldable throughout, except at the points of attachment of the reinforces. v In the form of embodiment of theinvention shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the reinforce is in the nature of a metallic clip having at each end an inturned flange 5, which is clenched around both edges of the body portion, thus to secure it thereon, theintermediate portion of the body to the clip being provided with an opening 6, through which the tack or other attaching device is driven.
In the form ofembodimentof the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the reinforce is also a metallic clip, but is provided with but a single flange 7 to be clenched around one edge of the body portion.
In the form of embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the reinforce is constructed from a piece of suitable material,
preferably of metal, and is rectangular in shape and has its corners inturned to present prongs 9, which are forced through the body portion and clenched on the opposite side, as clearly shown in Fig. 7. This form of reinforce is of less width than that of the body portion to present the yielding edges before referred to. The reinforce is also provided with an opening 10 to receive the securing element.
In the form of embodiment of invention shown in Fig. 8 the reinforce will be made of a piece of any material other than metal, such as heavy oil-board or pasteboard or any other substance suited to the purpose.
Instead of providing the reinforce with means for attaching it to the body portion, such as shown in Figs. 10, 11, and 12, it may be a plain rectangular structure, as shown in Fig. 13, this latter form of reinforce being generally employed in connection with the embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
As a matter of further and specific improvement the body portion may have a substance applied to it to render it waterproof, or it may be dipped in some waterproofing agent, such as oil, thereby materially to prolong its life.
Fig. 9 exhibits one manner in which the fastener is presented for commercial use and consists in winding the same into a coil, so that in use desired lengths may be cut off as requisite.
In employing the fastener it is secured along the edges of a poster or other advertising medium by means of tacks or nails in the manner common to ordinary wooden battens. Owing to its flexibility it will readily conform to the surface to which the poster is attached, and by reason of the broad bearingsurface presented by the reinforces danger of the securing elements or of the reinforces tearing through the body will be positively obviated.
The device of this invention while exceedingly simple in construction will be found of high efficiency and durability in use, and owing to its lightness and the manner in which it may be presented for use, as in the form of a coil, will be found more convenient to transport and attach than the ordinary battens heretofore employed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. A fastener for posters or the like, comprising a strip of flexible material having permanently-reinforced attaching-points.
2. A fastener for posters or the like, comprising a strip of flexible material having reinforcing devices permanently associated therewith and inset from the edges of the strip.
