SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 747,159, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed March 24, 1903. Serial No. 149,248. (No model-) To a wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER J. FLAGSTAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacred Heart, in the county of Renville and State of Minnesota,haveinvented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combination Nippers and (Jlenchers for Horseshoe-Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an efficient device for nipping and clenching horseshoe-nails after they are driven through the shoe and the horses hoof; and to the above ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is-illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, showing the improved tool in operative position on a horses hoof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool, some parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isabottom plan view of the so-called clenching-plunger and the attached parts, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line r of Fig. 4.
The character a indicates a horses hoof and the character 1) indicates a horseshoe. The character 0 indicates a horseshoe-nail of the ordinary construction.
The tool involves a pair of levers 1 and 2,
.pivotally connected at 3, the said lever 2, as
shown, being bifurcated at 4 to pass the lever l. The short prong of the lever 1 is formed with an anvil-prong 5, which is adapted to engage the head of the driven nail. At the junction of the prong 5 with the lever l is a stop-shoulder 6, which is adapted to engage the outer portion of the horseshoe to limit the inward position of the tool with reference to the shoe and hoof. Apronged grapple-jaw 7 embraces the anvil-prong 5 and is pivotally connected to the lever 1 at 8. At its free end the jaw 7 is formed with a catch-lug 9, which is adapted to engage the inner edge of the horseshoe, as shown in Fig. 1. A leaf-spring 10, secured at 11 to the jaw 1, engages the free end of the grapple-jaw 7 and yieldingly forces the same upward or toward the cooperating end of the lever 2.
Mounted to slide transversely through the short end of the lever 2 is a so-called clenching-plunger 12, the inner end of which is rounded and preferably roughened, so that it will engage the end of the nail with a very considerable friction. A coiled spring 13, compressed between the shoulder 14 on the plunger 12 and a clamp 15, secured to the lever 2, yieldingly presses the plunger 12 inward, as shown in Fig. 2. This inward movement of the plunger 12 is limited by the engagement of the shoulder 16 thereof with the said clip 15. At itsinnerend the plunger 12 is formed with lateral shoulders 17, that engage the sides of the lever 2 and positively limit the outward movement of the plunger 12.
The nipping-slide 18, having a lateral projecting cutting edge 1.),is adjustably'and movably secured to the inner face of the clenching-plunger 12, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In this instance a screw 20 works loosely through a slot 21 in the slide 18 and is screwed into the plunger 12. Anotherscrew,22,works through a slot 23 in a stop-bracket 24 and rigidly but adjustably secures the said bracket to the plunger 12. The slide 18 has a reduced portion which works between the bracket 24 and the plunger 12 and has a slot 25, that works freely on the screw 22. The bracket 24 constitutes an adjustable stop for limiting the outward movement of the slide 18 with reference to the plunger 12. A coiled spring 26 reacts against the shoulders on the plunger 12 and slide 18 and yieldingly holds said slide 18 outward to its limit with respect to the plunger 12. A nipper-lever 27 is pivoted at 28 to the nipper-slide 18, and at its other end is provided with a cam-slot 29, that engages the cam-pin 30, secured to the lever 2. This nipper-lever 27 works in the bifurcation 4 of the lever 2, and on its inner edge it is provided with a nipping-blade or cutter 31, which cooperates with the cutting edge 19 of the slide 18. As shown, the cutter 31 is adjustably secured to the lever 27 by screws 32.
The device is used by applying the same as shown in Fig. 1, by reference to which it will be noted that the an vii-prong 5 tightly presses the head of the nail 0, while the lug 9 of the clipper-jaw 7 holds the tool against outtCO ward-sliding movement from working posi-' tion. The spring 10 permits the clipper-jaw 7 to yield, so that the anvil-prong may always closely engage the head of the nail.
The tool is of course applied with the projecting point of the nail extended between the cutting edge 19 of the slide 18 and the cooperating cutting edge of the cutter 31. When the handle ends of the levers 1 and 2 are then pressed together and the jaw ends of the levers closed up, the clenching-plunger 12 will be moved outward, carrying with it the ni per-slide 18, and under this movement the cutting elements 19 and 31 will be forced together and caused to cut off the point of the nail. The amount of projection left to the end of the nail after it is out off may be varied by adjusting the nipper-slide 18 on the plunger 12 by means already described. The spring 26 will permit the slide 18 to move inward slightly with respect to the plunger 12 under the nipping or cutting action, thus relieving the cutting edge 19 as well as the cutting edge of the cutter 31 from such lateral strains as might tend to break the same.
The point of the nail being cut off, as described,and continued pressure being applied to the levers 1 and 2, the shoulders 17 of the clenching-plunger 12 will be forced against the sides of the lever 2, and under continued pressure the rounded and roughened inner end of the clenching-plunger will be forced against and drawn over the projecting end of the nail, and thereby turn the point of the nail downward and into the hoof, or, in other words, clench the nail.
The tool described is of course capable of considerable modification within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patents of the United States, is as follows:
1. The combination with a pair of pivotally-connected levers, the one having an anvil projection for engagement with the head of the nail, of a clenching-plunger, mounted to slide in one jaw of said lever, and a pair of cooperating nippers or cutters, one member thereof being mounted by said clenchingplunger and the other member being pivotally connected thereto and to the jaw of said lever, substantially as described. I
2. The combination with the levers 1 and 2, pivotally connected at 3, the said lever 2 being bifurcated at 4, and the said lever 1 having the anvil-prong 5, of the clenchingplunger 12, springpressed and movably mounted in the jaw of said lever 2, the nipper-slide 18 spring-pressed and mounted on said plunger 12, and having the cutting edge 19, and the lever 27 pivoted to said slide 18 at 28, provided with the cutter 31, and subject to said lever 2, at its free end, said parts operating substantially as described.
3. The combination with the pivotally-connected levers 1 and 2, said lever 1 having the anvil-prong 5, of the spring-pressed grapplejaw 7, pivoted to said lever 1, and provided with the lug 9,v the sliding clenching-plunger 12, spring-mounted and having a limited movement in the jaw of said lever'2, the nipper-slide l8 spring-mounted for a limited movement on said plunger 12, the adjustable stop 24: limiting the movement of said slide 18, and the lever 27 pivoted to said slide 18 at 28, provided with a cutter 31, and connected, at its free end, to said lever 2, said parts operating substantially as described.
