INDICATOR FQR DILATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,068, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed February 20, 1903. Serial No. 144,303. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CARL GEORG HEYNE- MANN, mechanician, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 15 Thomasring, in the city of Leipzig, Germany, have invented a certain new and usefullndicator for Dilators of Straight and Curved Shape, of which the following is a specification.
Unscrewable so-called dilators are instruments which serve for the gradual en- In the devices of this kind heretofore employed the screwed-on extension and the circumferenceindicator were so arranged that the shaft which was inolosed in a body part closed on three sides was connected to the driving-pin and with screw-threads also, on which a nut was capable of displacement which projected through a slot on the fourth side of the body part and was provided with a rack-bar engaging with a gear wheel or pinion arranged on the outside of the body part and carrying a pointer which indicated the degree of enlargement produced by the dilator on a graduated scale or dial. This kind of apparatus does not allow the repeated boiling out in water for the purpose of a thorough disenfection without seriously damaging the entire driving mechanism, inasmuch as the inclosed parts refuse to dry after the boiling and in View of the impossibility of renewing the lubrication of the shafts and of the friction-surfaces. These inconveniences are avoided in my invention, which is illustrated on the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1 in elevation, in Fig. 2 in top view, and in Fig. 3 in bottom view.
The novel arrangement and combination of parts are such that the body part k of the device is flattened off on its side faces,while the interior is open and accessible. The axis is also exposed as far as the point of connection with the driving-shaft s and passes through the motion-imparting nut m. This nut is journaled in a cone 0, which is also provided with a lateral opening, thereby allowing of both the shaft and the cone to be easilydried and lubricated after the boiling. One end of the nut m is provided with a circular rack z, engaging with recesses of the indicator-diskp, which is rotatably secured to the inner surface of the body part and is provided with a graduation on its surface which is made to move with relation to a stationary pointer q.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a dilation-indicator, a driving-shaft, an operating-nut on said shaft, a gear-wheel also on said shaft and driven thereby, a rotatable indicator-disk, means for driving said disk from said gear-wheel, and a support for said shaft, said support being flattened on two sides, and having two sides partly broken away for convenience in cleaning, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CARL GEORG HEYNEMANN.
Witnesses:
