To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AN'rrMo Rois, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at 52 Real, Tarragona, Spain, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Indicating Mechanism for Spring-Motors, of which the following is a specification. 7
Spring motors employed. in clockwork mechanism for music boxes and pho'nographs and in general in those cases where a small power is sufiicient to set mechanism into operation, ordinarily consist of a band of tempered steel capable of being wound in order to produce a force which may be applied in the distention of the steel band and which may be communicated to the mechanism by means of toothed wheels.
The operation of winding the steel band or spring is done by hand and it presents the difliculty that the operator cannot properly determine the degree of tension of the spring until the key used for the purpose oflers a pronounced resistance to turning so that it frequently happens that the turning is continued beyond the limits indicated by a pronounced resistance whereby the steel band orspring is broken.
The mechanism which is the subject matter of the application has for its object to indicate the power stored in the spring accord ing to the degree it has been wound whereby the operator can readily observe the degree of tension attained in winding and can at any moment in the operation of the motor observe the degree of power remaining still stored in the spring.
In the annexed drawing are represented by way of example two constructions, Figures 1 and 2 represent a side view and plan view of one construction, while Figs. 3 and 4 represent side and plan views of a modified construction.
In carrying the invention into effect as illustrated in Fig. 1, a spindle A has mounted upon one of its extremities a spring A by means of a screw B while at the other extremity the spring is connected to the wall of the barrel C by means of a screw 13. The spindle A is tubular and is provided in its interior with a portion D having a screw thread in which is screwed the thread E of the rod F mounted within the bore of the spindle A. The rod F has toward its lower extremity a notch G. The barrel is provided to turn upon the spindle A and it 1s provided at its lower end with a circular Specification of Letters i'atent.

The lower part of the barrel is provided with a central tubular boss I whose bore is provided with two partsrof difi'erent diameter. That portion of larger diameter serves asa socket for i the spindle A while the other serves for the reception of the rod F. In the notch G of this latter the extremity of the retaining screw J is passed, the screw J being carried by the boss I.
When the mechanism is wound the spindle A turns and communicates a rectilinear descending movement to the rod F which slides guided by the notch G upon the screw J, this latter preventing it from turning. The lower extremity of the rod F forces the arm K of a lever L pivoted at M to the support of the mechanism. The other arm of the lever causes the movement of the rod N provided at its upper extremity with a rack O for the purpose of causing the rotation of a pinion P provided with an indicating finger Q traversing a graduated sector R. At S a spring is mounted for returning the parts to their original position while the steel band not being distended causes the turning of the barrel C, the screw J carrying in its movement of rotation the screwed rod F which being forced to travel over the thread of the spindle A ascends.
In the modification Figs. 3 and 4, the movement of the pinion P carrying the finger Q, is obtained by the upward movement of the rod F provided with a rack F toward its upper end engaging with the said pinion P.
The invention is not limited to the construction represented but comprises the variations in which the essential features of the invention are involved.
I claim:
1. Indicating mechanism for spring motors, comprising a barrel, a spring, a tubular spindle mounted concentric with thebarrel and to which one end of the spring is secured, a rod mounted within the tubular spindle, said rod being screw threaded into part of the tubular spindle, means for preventing the said rod being rotated by the tubular spindle, an indicator, and means for conveying the rectilinear movement of the rod to the said indicator, substantially as described.
