To all whom it may concern,.- l
Be it known that I, Lnw HARRY GRIFFITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moores Hill, in the county of Dearborn and VState of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Lamp Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamp attachments, and especially to a connection between the lamp and its burner, whereby the latter may be tilted backward for filling the lamp, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character of simple construction which in practice will form a strong firm connection between the lamp and its burner, one through which a circulation of air is constantly maintained for obviating accumulation of gas and consequent explosions, and one in which overiiowing of the oil while filling the lamp is prevented.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical sectional view illustrating my improved device applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the device removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates my improved connection or coupling comprising a lower section or member 2 and an upper section or member 3, these and the other parts of the device hereinafter described being all composed of any suitable metal, but ably from sheet-brass.
The lower or primary section 2, which is preferably of circular form, as is also the upper section, is provided with a central opening 4, surrounded by a depending externallythreaded neck or flange 5, designed in practice to screw into the neck 6 of a lamp 7, and with an upstanding peripheral flange 8, entirely surrounding and inclosing the horizontal portion or plate 9 of the member for the purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The upper or secondary section 3 is provided with a central opening 10, adapted in practice to register with the opening 4 and surrounded byan upwardly-extending exterprefernally-threaded neck or flange 11, onto which the burner 12 of the lamp is screwed, and with a depending peripheral iiange 13, surrounding the normally horizontal portion or plate 14 of the member.
The members 2 and 3 are pivotally connected at one side, preferably by means of a hinge 15, one leaf of which is attached to the under side of plate 9 and the other to the upper face of plate 14, thus permitting the members to close one upon the other, in which position the flange 8 of member 2, the inner diameter of which is substantially equal to the outer diameter of flange 13, will inclose the latter, which being of a depth substantially equal to the height of flange 8 will consequently bear at its lower edge upon the upper face of plate 9, thus forming between the members an air-space 16, to which air freely en- 4 ters through openings 17, formed through the plate 14 of member 3.
The sections or members are locked in their closed relation by a catch member 18, pivoted to the plate 14 of member 3 to swing in a horizontal plane and formed adjacent to its outer end to enclasp the horizontal portions of the members, the' catch being also provided at its outer end with a finger-piece 19.
In practice the latch will maintain the members in secure locked position for holding the burner in proper position upon the lamp, at which time the lamp-wick will eX- tend downward through the central openings in the members, and a current of cool air will pass through the openings 17 and circulate within the air-space 16 between the members, thus preventing undue heating of the parts and the accumulation of gas,obviating liability of explosions. The latch may be readily manipulated for releasing the members to permit backward tilting of the burner for lling the lamp, during which operation the iiange 8 will prevent the escape of any oil which may flow upon the plate 9.
Frein the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device of simple construction which will be efficient inv operation and one which is admirably adapted for the attain- IOO precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. In a device of the class described, the combination with a primary member having a horizontal portion provided with an opening surrounded by a depending neck, of a secondary member pivotally associated with and adapted to close upon the primary member, saidsecondary member having a horizontal portion provided with an opening sur rounded by an upstanding neck, a ange provided upon one of said members for engagement with the other to form an air-space between them when closed, oneof'said members having an air-inlet opening or openings communicating with the air-space,and means for locking the members relatively in their closed position.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a primary member having a horizontal portion provided with an upstanding ange and an opening surrounded by a depending neck, of a secondary member pivotally associated with and adapted to close upon and coperatie with the primary member to form an air-space between them when closed, said secondary member having a horizontal portion provided with an opening surrounded by an upstanding neck and one of the members having an air-inlet opening or openings communicating with the airspace, and means for locking the members relatively in their closed positions.
