SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,945, dated December 15, 1903.

To all whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. FRAIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain lmprovements in Padlocks, of which the follow# ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fast-shackle padlocks; and the object of my improvements is to provide a lock that will be not only strong and durable, but also simple and cheap in construction and the parts of which can be easily assembled.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per-.
spective view of a padlock embodying my im-l provements. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe body of the case, the cap being removed and showing the operating parts locking theswinging end of the shackle in the case; and Fig. 3, a similar view, but showing the parts in the position occupied thereby when the shackle is open. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the whole lock, taken on broken line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a vertical section on broken line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the body of the case, the operating parts being removed. Fig. 7 is a top perspective view of the locking-bolt and of the parts formed therewith. Fig. 8 is a top perspective View of the lever, and Fig. 9 a perspective side View of the shackle.

In the construction hereinafter described the sides of the lock-case taper inward from the bottom to the top, being longitudinally divided vertically into halves, and for the purpose of this specification the half of the case in which the operating mechanism is more particularly located will be termed the body7 of the case and the other half the :c can. Referring to the details of the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the case, 2 the cap, and
3 the shackle. The shackle has one end 4h pivoted on a pin 5, which, with a pin 6, is lixed in the body of the case, these pins serving as Serial No. 69,099. (No model.)
v rivets, whereby said body of the case and the cap 2 are fastened together'.
Just below the top of the 'case and disposed lengthwise thereof is a vibratingbolt having ajaw 9 on one end and a groove 2O in the other end 21. Jaw 9 is adapt-ed to engage a notch 10 in the tongue 11 on the swinging end .12 of the shackle tolock said end of the shackle in the case. Formed on the lower edge ofthe vibrating bolt and located between the jaw 9 and the groove 20 isa depending stem 21', terminating in an eye 8, wherethrough the holt is pivoted on a stud 7 in the body of the case. An arm 13 depends from the lower side of eye 8 and is adapted to engage a ver tical rib 14 in the body of the case and prevent the binding of jaw 9 in the notch 10.
An inward extension 15 of the fast end of the shackle has a shoulder on its outer edge, and fixed in the body of the case and adjacent to extension 15 is a stud 1'7,whereon is fulcrumed a lever 18, having an arm 19, engaging the groove 2O in the vibrating bolt. Fulcrnmstud 17 is located between leverarm 19 and pin 5, Whereon is pivoted shackle 3. The swinging arm 22 of the lever 18 ex tends beyond arm 19 toward eye 8, and it has on its outer extremity a downwardly-extend- -ing arm 23, carrying a stud 24. on its lower end, that serves as a bearing for the key 25, and also, by contact with the side offv cap 2, in assisting to retain lever 18 in its proper position, as will be explained.
A stud 26 is located on arm 22 of lever 18 between fulcrum-stud 17 and arm 23. This stud 26 is engaged by the short leaf 27 of a spring 28, coiled around stud 7 and above dog 8. The long leaf 29 of spring 28 bears against the shoulder 16 of the extension of the fast end of the shackle, and it acts both to automatically open the shackle and to actuate lever-arm 19 to force the vibrating bolt into engagement with the swinging arm of said shackle.
Lever 18 has its pivoted arm supported by a shoulder 30 of fulcrum-stud 17, and its swinging arm 22 is provided on its under side with a stud 31, that'hears on and travels over a vertical rib 32 on the back of body 1 of the case. Rib 32 increases in depth from its upper toward its lower end,so that the .distance between its face and the back of cap 2 is uniform throughout its whole length, whereby the upward pressure of stud 31 maintains stud 24 of arm 23 in contact with the back of cap 2, and the movement of lever 18 is rendered steady and uniform. On the lower end of rib 32 is a shoulder 33, that limits the retraction of lever 18 under the impulse of spring 28.
As illustrated, the key 25 is entered at one end of the case; and in order to operate it the nose 34 is engaged with the recess 35 in vertical rib 14. The changes for the keys of different locks is effected by the variations in the location in the body of the case of a post 36, adapted to engage one of the notches ranging therewith inthe edge 0f the key.
In operating, the action of the key is aided by the leverage given it by making the distance from fulcrum-stud 17 to arm 23 greater than the distance from said fulcrum-stud to the arm 19, engaging the groove 20 of the vibrating bolt.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a bolt adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, a lever, an arm formed with the lever and havingamovable and continuous connection with the bolt, and a second arm on the lever and adapted to be actuated by the key, said second arm being at a greater' distance from the fulcrnm of the lever than is the arm connected with the bolt, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a bolt adapted to engage theswinging end of the shackle, a lever fulcrumed at one end and having the free end constructed to be actuated by the key, an arm located on the lever between the fulcrum and the free end thereof and operatively engaging the bolt, for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a bolt having a groove therein and adapted to engage tne swinging end of the shackle, a lever fulcrumed at one end, an arm on the free end of the lever and adapted to be engaged by the key, a second arm located on the lever between the fulcrum and the free end thereof and continuously engaging said groove in the bolt, for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a vibrating holt adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, a stem on the bolt and having an eye thereon, whereby the bolt is pivoted on a stud in the lock-case, a device for actuating the bolt, a rib in the case, and an arm on the eye of said bolt-stem and located to engage said rib when the bolt is engaged with the shackle, for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a vibrating bolt having on its outer end a jaw adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, a lever constructed to be actuated by the key, an operating connection between said lever and the inner end of the vibrating bolt, a. stern located on the bolt between the said jaw and the point of connection of said bolt and the lever, and an eye on the bolt-stem and pivoted on a stud in the lock-case, for the purpose specified.
6. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a vibrating bolt having in its inner end a groove and onitsouterenda jawadapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, a leverconstructed to be actuated bythe key, an arm on the lever and engaging the groove in the inner end of the vibrating bolt, a rib in the case, a stem located on said bolt between the jaw and the groove, an eye on the bolt-stem and pivoted on a stud in the lockcase, and an arm on the eye of the bolt-stem and located to engage said rib when the bolt engages the shackle, for the purpose speciied.
7. The combination, in a padlock, of a shackle, a bolt adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, a lever, an operating connection between the lever and the bolt, an arm of the lever adapted to be actuated by the key, the force of the key being applied to the lever at a greater distance from the fulcrum thereof than is said connection between the lever and the bolt, and bearing-studs on opposite sides of the lever, for the purpose specied.
8. The combination,in a padlock, of acase having the sides spreading from the top toward the bottom, a rib on the inner face of one wall of the case and. increasing in depth from the top toward the bottom of said case, a bolt adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, and an operating-leverconnected with the bolt and having a stud thereon constructed to engage and travel over the face of said rib, for the purpose specified.
9. The combination in a padlock, of a case having the sides spreading from the top toward the bottom, a rib on the inner face of one wall of the case and increasing in depth from the top toward the bottom of said case, a shoulder on the lower end of the rib, a bolt adapted to engage the swinging end of the shackle, an operating-lever connected with the bolt, a stud on one side of the bolt and constructed to engage and travel over said rib, and a stud on the other side of the bolt and bearing against the other wall of the case,
for the purpose specified.
