Be it known that I, THADIOUS VENSON EL- LIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in gas-consuming furnaces, and particularly in steamboiler furnaces, and has for an object to provide a novel. construction whereby the gases escaping from the furnace may be returned directly to the fire and be consumed, thereby avoiding the loss of the gas and economizing the heat units secured in the operation of the furnace; and the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts constituting the gas-returning device and inthe combination thereof with'a draft device detail sectional view showing the air'valve used on the upper ends of the upright connecting-pipes.
By my invention I provide means for collecting or catching the gases which escape from the furnace and forreturning same by means of aforced draft into the f urnace,where they will be consumed. In the application of the invention to return-flue boilers, such as shown at A in Figs.1 and 2, I provide for catching the gases discharged through the upper lines, as being of less specific gravity than the other products of combustion they will pass naturally through the upper flues. I thence return the gases to the furnace and discharge them below the grate-bars, whence they will pass up through the fire and be consumed, thus increasing the heat of the fire and economizing thelcombustiou by securing a combustion ofall the combustible parts of -the fuel. To this end I provide a collecting pipe or pipes B, closed at one end at B and provided throughout their lengths on their under sides and sides adjacent to the discharge end of the boiler-fines with perforations 5 of such size and number as to receive the gases discharged from the upper flues of the boiler and deliver same to the upright return-pipes O, with which the pipes B connect at their ends opposite their closed ends B. The pipes 0 preferably extend above their connection with the pipes B and are provided at their upper ends with valves D, which may be adjusted to regulate the amount of air admitted to the pipe 0 to mingle with'the steam discharged by the injector F ata point below the connection of the pipes B with the pipes C, such injectors E discharging downwardly and forcing the gases down to deliver into the discharge-pipes F and G, arranged below the grate-bars H of the furnace H. The pipe F extends between and connects the lower end of the opposite pipes O, and the pipes Gr connect with the pipes O and F and extend longitudinally beneath the grate, as shown in Fig. 1. The
valve D is in the form of a cap closed at its upper end, fitting on the upper end of the. pipe C and having a longitudinal slot D,
which by the adjustment of the cap up or down may be regulated to admit more or less air to the pipe 0, as desired. The pipes F and G are perforated to permit the discharge of the gases, which will pass directly to the fire, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In directing the steam-pipes E to the injectors E it is preferred to provide such pipes with a drop portion or bend E so the valves F. for controlling said pipes may be located inconvenient reach from the floor or bed of the furnace.
In Fig. 2 I show two side pipes O and a 001- cross collecting-pipes B with the inner-upright connecting-pipe O, as shown in said Fig. 4.
In operation it will be understood the valves D and the valves E may be regulated to secure the desired supply of steam and air,
which will operate efficiently to produce the necessary suction in the collecting-pipes B to draw thereinto the gases discharged from the upper fines of the furnace and to force said gases through the pipe 0 into the dischargepipes F and g, whence they will pass to the furnace. It will be noticed that by the described construction I provide areturn force draft by which to collect the gases and to return the same to the furnace. It will also be noticed that this return-draft is exerted on the gases discharged from the upper fines of the boiler. Now to prevent any checking of the draft of the furnace and to insure the proper operation of the furnace, as desired, I provide a draft device I in the stack A of the furnace in such manner as to produce a force draft which will catch the products of combustion discharged from the lower fines of the boiler,passing upwardly and outwardly around the collecting-tubes B, and deliver such products out of the stack. It will therefore be noticed that my invention includesa draft device operating upon the stack in such manner as to secure the desired draft upon the furnace in connection with the force return draft for delivering the gases back to the furnace. The specific draft device I show is not in its specific construction claimed herein, butforms the subject-matter of a separate application for patent executed by me of even date herewith, and it will be understood that in the practicable operation of the present invention I may substitute other forms of draft-inducing devices from that shown at I in Fig. 1 Without departing from the broad principles of the present invention,although the draft device I, as shown in Fig. 1, is preferred.
My draft-return devices, it will be noticed, comprise in the form shown in Fig. 2 the cross collecting-tubes extending in opposite directions from the opposite upright connecting-tubes, in which operate the injectors and which connectingtubes discharge at their lower ends to the cross discharge-tube F and the opposite longitudinal discharge-tubes G, which extend between the grate of the furnace and discharge the gas to the furnace in a finely-divided condition, thus insuring the proper combustion of the gases in the opera.- tion of the furnace. It will also be noticed that the pipes C extend sufficiently above the injectors E to form short stacks through which the air will be drawn by the injectors when the steam is turned on.
In operation it will be noticed the gases will be hived or collected in the pipes B and will be conducted thence to the furnace, where they will be consumed, my invention including, therefore, broadly, means for hiving the unconsumed gases discharged from the furnace and means for returning the gases so hived to the furnace for consumption therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas-consuming device substantially as herein described, comprising in combination with a return-flue boiler and the furnace thereof, the opposite upright connecting- .tnbes provided with valves for controlling the inlet of air and below said valves with downwardly-directed injectors, the cross collecting-tubes perforated to receive the gases and extending in opposite directions from the opposite connecting-tubes inwardly and across the front of the boiler, adjacent to the upper fines thereof, and a perforated crosstube and longitudinally-extending tubes connected with the lower ends of theupright connecting-tubes, and extending beneath the grate of the furnace, and the steam-pipes for the injectors, having drop portions and valves therein, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a gas-consuming device, of the opposite upright connectingpipes, the laterally-extending collecting-pipes leading in opposite directions inwardly from their respective connecting-pipes, the latter being provided withextensions above the collecting-pipes and with valves controlling said extensions, the steam-injector devices discharging to the connecting-pipes, the cross discharge-pipes extending between the connecting-pipes at the lower ends thereof, and the longitudinally-extending discharge-pipes, substantially as set forth.
8. A gas-consuming device comprising the opposite upright connecting-tubes provided with valves for controlling the inlet of air, injectors below said valves, the cross collecting-tubes extending in opposite directions from the opposite connecting-tubes inwardly,
a perforated cross-tube and longitudinallyextending tubes connected with the lower ends of the connecting-tubes, and the steampipes for the injectors, substantially as set forth.
