PATENT OFFICE.
SCHULTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,907, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed October 2d, 1,902. Serial No. 128,555. (Normodel.)
of Chicago, in the county of Cook and StateV of Illinois, have invented certain ,new-and useful Improvements in a Combined Spool- Holder and Cushion, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates more particularly to articles used for holding spools of thread in convenient position, also to cushions used therewith and for holding needles and pins.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple construction for devices of this class and which is efficient in use and which ca be made at a low cost.
Another object is to provide an improved cushion, which is held at the top of the support and which is of such construction than it can be rotatedso all sides thereof can be conveniently use d, and which also serves as a cross-tie or support for the frame.
Lastly, the invention designs to provide an improved combined holderand cushion which is simple in construction.
The invention consists in the several novelfeatures hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a combined spool-holder and cushion embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section.
-A and A' denote standards which form sides whereby the several parts of the device are sustained in desired elevation. The base of each standard is spread to form feet oc', sufticiently far apart to secure the device in such manner that it will notbe easily upset when in use. The standards are securely held in desired vertical relation and against lateral movement by a cross-rod B, which is preferably formed of tubing and has its ends abutting against the inner face of each standard and which is provided at each end With an intern al screw-thread b,wherewith a screw B will engage and whereby the standards and cross-rod will be secured together. The standards and cross-rod form the supporting-frame of the device and provide a construction of parts which is simple, can be readily assem- "the standards in lugs n.3.
h bled, and in .which thek necessity of employing a frame-base is avoided. Such a construction permits the frame parts to be conveniently packed for shipment and readily assembled.
The spools of thread, yarn, and the like are l held on rods C C in desired number. Spoolvrods C C' are removably held and rest in openings a.' formed in the standards. These rods `are preferably formed of tubing and are provided at each end with anl internal screwthread c, with whicha thumb-screw C2 engages. Each screw C2 is provided with a shoulder c', which projects beyond the periphery of the rod, engages the standard, and secures the rod. against endwise play in the frame. Each of these rods is projected through opening d', so as to limit the inward movement of screws C2 and prevent these screwsfrom forcing the standards inwardly.
only necessary to remove the screw at that end at which the spool to be replaced is located and then to slide the rod laterally in one of the openings o. sufficiently to withdraw the rod from the bore of the spool. This construction of spool-holder is simple, permits the rod to be withdrawn through either end so a spool at one end can be replaced Without removing a spool at the other end, and is such that the rod is securelyA held against all danger 0E accidental displacement.
A cushion D is secured at the upper end of The cushion is constructed of a central core d, 'of Wood or like material and extending longitudinally thereof, wooden disks d', secured to the core in any suitable manner-e. g., by glue-a filling d2, of hair, sawdust, or the like, and a covering d3, of textile fabric. VCovering d3 is secured to the periphery of disks dl by tacks or in any suitable manner, and a ferrule d4 conceals the disks and covering at each end and gives the cushion a neat and finished appearance. The cushion is shown as of. cylindrical or polygo- ICO nal contour, so all sides thereof can be used to hold pins or needles. A screw d5, extending through a perforation 0.4 in each lug 0,3 of the standard and into Wooden core CZ, secures the cushion in desired position in the frame. Screws d5 are usually driven into the core until the heads of the screw are in position to prevent end play of the cushion, and when in such position the cushion will be held so that it can be rotated and so it Will be held in any assigned position by frictional contact by the screw and frame. Such construction is of advantage, because the cushion can be readily secured in position in the frame. The cushion can be rotated so the entire periphery of the cylindrical body can be used to hold pins and needles, and in such manner that the cushion will be held in any assigned position. Each of the standards is usually formed with a hook @Gat the back side thereof, which forms a rest for a pair of scissors or the like and which does not interfere with convenient access to the spools and holders.
Having thus described our invention, what wev claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- l. The combination With a supportingframe, formed of a pair of standards, and a cross-rod extending between said standards and rigidly secured thereto, and forming a rigid connecting-support for said standards,
of a spool-holder formed of a rod removably held in said standards, and a cushion extending horizontally between, and sustained by the upper ends of said standards.
2. The combination with a supportingframe formed of a pair of standards, and a cross-rod extending between said standards, and Vrigidly secured thereto, and forming a rigid connecting-support for said standards, of ya spool-holder formed of a rod extending between the standards and resting in perforations in said standards, and having screwthreaded sockets within said rods, and ascrew at each end of said holder, each of said screws having a screw-threaded portion ext-ended into one of the sockets, and a shoulder eX- tended to engage the standards, said holder being lremovable endwise through the openings in said standards.
3. The combination with a pair of supporting-standards and spool-holding means of a cylindrical cushion for pins, needles and the like, and held in said standards, said cushion extending between the standards and comprising a core, end disks, a filling and a covering.
