CHLORIN ATION BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,867, dated December 1903- Application filed November 9, 1900. Serial No. 35,983. (No model.)
My invention relates to chlorinating-bar rels; and my invention consists in providing a chlorinating-barrel with a strainer in the form of one or more longitudinal channeledand perforated ribs, to which lateral channeled and perforated ribs [may be added] so as to increase the available area of the barrel and reduce the cost of construction without impairing the durability, as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a section of a part of a chlorinating-barrel su fficicnt to illustrate my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional plan; Fig. 3, a transverse section showing aplurality of straining-ribs; Fig. 4:, a transverse section illustrating a different form of straining-rib with means for clamping it within the barrel; Fig. 5, a longitudinal vertical section at the center of Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a longitudinal vertical section at the center of Fig. 4.
The barrel A is of any usual construction, of wood or metal, and is adapted tobe mounted and rotated as usual with chlorinatingbare rels and is provided with a resistant lining of metal, as of lead, and with the outlet-opening :0 at one side, which is employed as usual to discharge the contents or admit wash-water and which is controlled by a suitable valve.
Instead of the usual flat perforated straining-platforms, which occupy an objectionable amount of space and require the use of strong supports, I provide a strainer in the form of one or more longitudinal pipes, shown as channeled ribs B, communicating with the outlet-opening to and with the interior of the barrel through perforations 1 1. The channeled rib may be of cast metal, with a pinrality of parallel pipes, or channels, as illustrated in Fig. 4, or preferably consists of a plate of uniform thickness bent or formed into an arch, as shown in the other figures, the arch form securing the desired interior channel and afiording sufficient strength in all directions to resist the pressure and im- I ing, soldering, or welding to the lining 5.
Preferably there is a plurality of lateral ribs C, each channeled and perforated and communicating with the channel of the longitudinal rib, separated sufiiciently for the entrance of the particles of ore between them and serving not only to secure a more extended screen area, but also serving to brace and strengthen the longitudinal rib. \Vhen there is a plurality of longitudinal ribs, the lateral ribs C may extend between the longitudinal ribs, as indicated in Fig. 3.
By the use of one or more channeled and perforated ribs, as above set forth, I am enabled to secure a greater amount of available space within the'barrel, and can thus do the same work with smaller and lighter barrels than heretofore. By making the ribs of arched plates I can secure the strength to resist the efiects of the pressure and percussion of the ore with ribs of comparatively light weight, and the weight may be still further reduced without impairing the resisting capacity by. the use of abutments to the longitudinal rib in the form of the lateral perforated and channeled rib.

rib extending longitudinally, secured to said lining and having perforations between the interior of the rib and barrel, and a dischargeopening commmunicating with the interior of the rib, substantially as set forth.
2. Achlorinating-barrel provided with a resistant lining and with a channeled rib extending longitudinally, secured to said lining and having perforations between the interior of the rib and barrel, a discharge-opening communicating with the interior of the rib, and lateral perforated channeled ribs, sub stantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel having a metallic lining, of an arched channeled and perforated longitudinal rib secured to said lining, lateral perforated channeled ribs communicating with the channel of the longitudinal rib and also secured in said lining, and an outlet-opening communicating with the interior of the longitudinal rib, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel having a metallic lining, of an arched channeled and perforated longitudinal rib secured fixedlyin place,lateral perforated channeled ribs communicating with the channel of the longitudinal rib, the said ribs secured fixedly within the barrel, and an outlet-opening communicating with the interior of the longitudinal rib, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel and its metallic lining, of a plurality of channeled and perforated ribs connected immovably with the lining, the channels communicating with the outlet-opening of the barrel, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel and its metallic lining, of a plurality of channeled and perforated ribs formed of a sheet of metal bent into parallel arches, the channels com mu nicating with the outlet-opening of the barrel, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel and its metallic lining, of a plurality of channeled and perforated longitudinal ribs formed of a sheet of metal bent into parallel arches, lateral perforated channeled ribs between the longitudinal ribs, and an outlet-opening communicating with the interior of the longitudinal rib, substantially as set forth.
8. A chlorination-barrel having a lining and provided with a series of channels communicating with the barrel through perforations throughout the length of each channel, said channels formed in part by the barrellining, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a chlorinationbarrel,of a series of perforated pipes arranged at one side of the barrel and communicating with a port or opening extending through the barrel and provided with a cock.
10. In a chlorination-barrel, a parallel series of pipes 0 having numerous smallorifices throughout their longitudinal walls, a transverse pipe B communicating with the pipes O and a port communicating with said pipe B and provided with a valve, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel having a lead lining, of a perforated arch burned to the lining, substantially as described.
12. The combination with a chlorinatingbarrel having a lining, of a filter in which a perforated arched member is burned to the lining and communicates with the outlet of the barrel, substantially as described.
13. In a filter-barrel a series of crowned plates, perforated with numerous small slots or holes, placed transversely across a lower are of said barrel, and fastened thereto by having theiradjacent surfaces burned, soldered, or brazed.
