To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAMN F. Connnno, a citizen of the Republic of Venezuela, and a resident of Rubio, Tachira, Venezuela, have invented a new and Improved Coii'ee-Separator, of which the following is a full, clear, and. exact description.
This invention relates to im separators or sizers for cofleeeans or other material the grains of which are of different sizes or specific gravity, the object being to provide a separator of simple construction by means of which the work may be rapidly carried on, with the complete separation of the material as to size.
I will describe a coffee-separator embodying my invention and then oint out the novel features in the appended claims' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters indicatecoia responding arts in all the figures.
Figure 1 s ows inplana separator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 4.- Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, the separation is made through the agency of water a plurality o tanks.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designatesa tank which may be termed the receivingtank, and 6 a tank arranged at right angles' to the tank 5 and communicating therewith, and this tank 6 may be termed the termina tank. As is clearly indicated in Fi s. 3 and 4, these tanks are slightly incline so that the water will flow through the same. A supply-chute 7 leads into the forward end of the said tank is divided lonitudinally between its bottom and top by a ed board or plate 8, and adjustable on this [board or plate is a regulating board or plate 9 to adjust the discharge-o ening for the portion of the tank. his plate 9 carries a olt 10, which passes throu h a slot 11 r'ovements in in the board 8, and by means oft 's bolt the said plate 9 is held as adjusted. At the oppositc end from the inlet the said tank is pro with an outlet-opening 12 for the lower ortion of said tank, and this 0 ening is regulated by a gate-valve 13, sli able 111 ways 14, formed in the sideboards of the tank. The i said side boards are extended somewhat betop of these extended portions is a cross-plate 15, having 1 an opening 16, through w 'ch a wedge 17 may pass for forcing the gate-valve tightly against the inner walls of said channels 14. It may be stated, however, that other means for securingthe gate-valve as adjusted may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Arran ed in the outlet end of the tank 5 is a curve deflecting-plate 20, and a similar deflecting-plate 21 is arra ed at the outlet end of the tank 6 for directmg material outward throu h the discharge-opening 22. The end of the iower chamber or portion of the tank. 6 has an-outlet 23, which is regulated by a gate-valve 24, similar to the gate-valve asses from the upe tank 6, which is 13, and the said gate-valve is held in position by'mean's of a Wedge 25; but, as before me tioned, other means may be employed. It will be noted that the tanks are arranged at right angles to each other and that the side walls at the discharge end of the lower chamber in the tank 6 are convergent from their inner ends 'outward, thus providing a somewhat choked outlet.
In the operation, assuming the cofiee to be divided into three grades, the several grades" are discharged with water into the supplychute 7, and upon reaching the tank 5 grade N0. 1, being the heaviest, will pass to the bottom chamber of said tank 5 and out through the discharge-opening at the end. The other two, grades will pass with the water over the boards 9 and 10 to the opening 19, through which the second grade will pass and discharge through the outlet. Then the third grade will pass with. the water over the board 18 and discharge through the openin 22. Of course suitable receptacles will be p aced to receive the several grades of coffee.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent '1. A separator or sizer, comprising communicating tanks arranged at right angles to each other, one of said tanks being the inlet-tank and the other board or plate arranged in the inlet-tank, separating it into upper and lower chambers, an openm end of said being provided between the inlet board or plate and the end'of the and bottom witha the terminal tank, a

inner end of said board or plate being spaced from the first tank, a valve-controlled inlet for the lower chamber of the last-named tank, and an outlet for the upper chamber of said last-named tank.
2. A coffee-separator, comprising an inlet tank and a communicating terminal tank arranged at right angles to the first-named tank, a board or plate arranged in the first named tank, and having its end spaced from the inlet eiid of said tank, a sliding valveplate for adjusting the space, the lower chamber of said. first-named tank having an outlet, a gate-valve for said outlet, means for holding the gate-valve as adjusted, a board or plate arranged between the top and bottom of said-terminal tank, the end of said board or plate being spaced from the firstnamed tank, the chamber below said board or plate being provided with an outlet, a
gate-valve for said outlet, means for holding said gate-valve as adjusted, and means for directing Water with the material to be separated, into said tanks.
3. A coffee-separator, comprising an inleta tank, and a communicating terminal tank arranged at right angles to the inlet-tank, a board or plate arranged between the top and bottom of the inlet-tank and spaced from the inlet end thereof, the said board or plate dividing said tank into upper and lower chambers, the lower chamber having an outlet-valve for regulating said outlet, a deflector arranged in the upper chamber at the outlet end, a board or plate arranged between the top and bottom ofthe terminal tank and dividing the same into, upper and lower chambers, the lower chamber having an outlet, a valve for said outlet, an outlet for the upper chamber, a deflector at the outlet end of said terminal tank in the upper chamber, and means for directin Water and material mto the first-named tank.
4. A coffee-separator comprising a pair of inclined tanks arranged at right angles to each other, and communicating, one with the carried through the upper chamber of the first-named tank, to the second-named tank, whereby the second-grade coflee-beans will pass to the lower chamber of the second tank and discharge therefrom, while the next grade passes through the upper chamber of the second tank and discharges therefrom with the water.
