'PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN THOMAS FITZPATRIOK, OF CORINTH, TEXAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 746,809, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed September 28, 19,03. Serial No. 174,886. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS FITZPAT- RICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corinth, in the county of Denton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inDevices for Lifting Kettles from Stoves, &c. and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for automatically lifting kettles from stoves when the water evaporates, to the extent ot' lightening one end of the beam on which the kettle is pivoted sufficiently to allow the other end of the beam to be drawn down by a suitable Weight,
and means for throwing the kettle, carriedv by the pivotal beam, to one side of the stovel after the beam is tilted.
The vinvention consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which Will behereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l isaperspeetive view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section,
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, Adesignates a hollow Vpiping having a top B, with a hook O fixed thereto, which is adapted to be held-bymeans of a pin or other suitable fastening device D, attached to the ceiling of a room or other suitable place. Mounted within said tubing is a rod E, the upper end of which is secured to a strap F, which is attached at its upper end to the under side of the top B.- Projecting from the tubular portion A, adjacent to its lower end, are the arms K, which have angled ends K downwardly disposed, and pivoted to the lower end of the rod E is a balancing-bar N, to one end of which is connected a hook M or other attachment to the bail ot' a kettle, and to the other end of the said balancing-bar N is connected a rod Q, upon which Weights are held.
The operation of my .device is as follows: When it is desired to suspend a kettle upon or over a stove, a quantity of Water is placed in the kettle and a Weightequal to the amount of water which it is desired to have evaporate before the pot is raised from the stove is placed upon the rod Q. When the apparatus is adjusted for use, the bar N is substantially in a horizontal position, and by giving a partially rotary turn to the rod E the strap F will be under tension and twisted. When it is desired to hold the kettle over the stove, the barN is caught behind one of the angled ends K of the arms K and held over the stove. i/Vhen the water in the kettle evaporates suticiently to allow the bar N to tilt below the angled end engaging said bar, the rod E will be partially rotated under tension of said strap sufiiciently to throw the kettle to one Yside 0E the stove.
While I have shown a particular construction ot apparatus illustrating my means for raising automatically a kettle from the stove, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. An apparatus for lifting kettles from stoves comprising a tubing suspended from the ceiling or other xed object,a rod mounted within said tubing, a strap connecting the rod to the top ot the tubing, said rod adapted to have a partially rotary movement within the tubing, a balancing-bar pivoted to the lower end ot said rod, weights mounted upon one end of said bar and a kettle attached to the other, and means for holding the rod under tension of said strap from rotating.
2. An apparatus for holding kettles over stoves comprising a tubing having a closed lv top, a hook secured to the said top adapted for connection to the ceiling or other part of a room, a rod mounted within said tubing,
and a strap secured to the'end of said tubing other end adapted to hold a kettle, as set and to the inner end of said rod, a batpvoted forth. i Io to the lower end of the rod, angled arms pro- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my jecting from said tubing and adapted to ensignature in presence of two witnesses.
