PATENT OFFICE.
PIPE WRENCH on CLAMIP;
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 746,705, dated December 15, 1903. Application tiled May 5, 1903. Slerial No. 155,775. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LCHARLES N. HUTCHINS,
acitizen of the United States, residing atv Pipe-VV'rench or Pipe-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements inv pipe-wrenches or pipe-clamps with which pipe may be clamped and held securely; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a pipe-wrench or pipe-clamp with which pipe may be instantly clamped with the jaws of the wrench and raised, lowered, turned, or released, as required; second, to provide facilities for the necessary adjustment of the said jaws, I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view showing the jaws locked together, the open position of the latch being indicated in dotted outline. Fig. 2 is an end view looking at the jaw end. The dotted lines show wrench or clamp as it appears when about to be opened.
The numerals marked thereon indicate the different parts, similar numerals referring to similar parts throughout. g
1 and 2 are the jaws of the wrench or clamp, the same beingmade with a curve to correspond with each other in the well-known pipeclamp style,the shape of the opening between the jaws when same are placed together being somewhat oblong to better fit diiferentsized pipes when jaws are applied to same.
3 is a screw used to connect jaws l and 2' together at their inner ends. Said screw is flattened at one end to allow same to be pivoted to jaw 2, the opposite end of the screw being screwed through jaw 1, thus connecting the jaws and providing adjustment for the same, as screw 3 can be turned in or out/when the straps (which will be referred to hereiuafter) are swung off from the end of jaw 1. as shown in dotted lines in the drawings.
4 and 4 are two steel straps used to connect jaw 2 and lever 5, (which will be referred to later,).the said straps being pivoted one end of each to opposite sides of'jaw 2 at the end opposite from the pivot connection between jaw 2 and connecting-screw 3, the other ends of said straps 4 and 4 being pivoted in like manner, thus hinging jaw 2 and lever 5 to- 1, so. that the straps 4 and 4 may be swung over the end of jaw l and lever 5 pressed down over fulcrum 6, (which will be referred to hereinafter,) the pivot through straps 4 and 4 and the end of lever 5 passing slightly over fulcrum 6, thus providing the required grip and securely locking the wrench or clamp. I
6 is a screw through the end of lever 5 and is set so as to formthe fulcrum for the said lever and acts on the end of jaw 1 when straps 4 and 4 are swung over theend of same and lever 5 is pressed down, the screw or fulcrum 6 being adjustable, thus furnishing the required grip to the wrench or clamp.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a 'pipe wrench or clamp of two gripping-jaws having a screw connection at their ends, the said screw having a pivot connection with'one jaw and threaded connection with the other, means located at the opposite ends of the jaws forlocking the jaws together and a handle or shankrigidly attached to one of the jaws, all substantially as set forth.
, 2. In a pipe wrench or clamp the combination with a handle orshank oftwo grippingjaws, one jaw being rigid with the handle and in substantial alinement therewith, the other jaw having pivotal connection with the bandle, a hinged locking-lever having link connection with the opposite end of the pivoted jaw, and the said lever having an adjustable fulcrum, substantialy as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
O. N. HU'IOHINS.
