N0 MODEL.
WITNESSES.
INVENTOR,
UNITED STATES Patented December s, 1903.
EDWARD EVANS, OF ELIZABETH,'WEST VIRGINIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 746,481, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed September 29, 1902. fierial No. 125,221. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Wirt and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful t ashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to rotary rubber washing-machines; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and efficient lever for operating the machine, together with novel means for raising the rubber.
The simple construction. employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my washing-machine, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the face of the rubber. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the rubbing-face of the bottom of the tub. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective of the lever.
The numeral 1 designates a base formed of parallel sills 1 to adapt it to support a tub 2 for holding clothes. Zigzag cleats 3, the general direction of which is radial, are secured to the inner face of the bottom 4 of the tub 2 to form a rubbing-surface. A rubber 5 is mounted in the tub 2, parallel to the bottom 4 thereof, and bears a series of zigzag radiallyextending cleats 6, like the cleats 3, which serve to cooperate with the bottom 4 to rub the clothes. The rubber 5 is carried by a vertical shaft 7, which is journaled in bearings 8, formed in a cross-head 9, comprising two parallel bars 9, separated by spacing-blocks 9 The cross-head 9 is slidingly mounted in vertical guide-grooves 10, formed in vertical standards 11, footed on the base 1 and united by a cross-bar 12. A roller 13 is journaled in the standard 11 and bears a crank l l for use in operating it to wind up a flexible member 15, which passes around the roller 13 and is attached to the cross-head 9. By operating the handle 14 the rubber 5 can be raised clear .-head 18 of the lever is pivoted to one of the bars 9 and swung back and. forth.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1's
In a washing-machine, a clothes or fabric rubber arranged in the fabric-receptacle, a vertically-sliding cross-head, standards having vertical slots guiding said cross-head in its movement, the shaft of said rubber having its journaled end carried by said cross-head, and a roll journaled in said standards and connected with a flexible member, in turn connected with said cross-head, and means for actuating said roll.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWVARD EVANS.
